Mangaluru: Investigation confirms wine shops opened, liquor was sold during lockdown

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 4: During the preliminary investigation, it has been found that several wine shops in the district illegally sold liquor during lockdown period by breaking open the lock sealed by the excise department. In all likelihood, a detailed report in this respect would be placed before the deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district shortly.

The district has 152 wine shops, 22 MSIL outlets and over 214 bars. There were claims that illegally, locks of some of the shops were forced open and liquor bottles were sold in violation of lockdown rules. The matter had also appeared in a section of the press. Taking note of this, deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh, on last Friday, had ordered for an investigation by way of checking whether the stock as found at the time of locking the store was intact.

The officials who began investigation from Saturday are learnt to have found discrepancy in the stock of liquor. The checking was done with video recording. Sources in excise department said that in some cases, over 30 cases of liquor have gone missing.

Deputy commissioner of excise Shylaja Kote, said that as per the instructions of the district deputy commissioner, checking of over 30 suspected shops was undertaken and some irregularities were found. She said that a detailed report would be submitted in a couple of days.

It is said that in some cases, officials who get information about sale of liquor illegally send lower level staff for checking. If it is proved, senior officials intervene and lay stress on settling issue through mutual discussions, it is said.

The fact that lockdown was lifted and liquor sale was permitted even as checking of liquor shops is in progress has created problems for the investigation. The people also feel that the mention of checking of only shops suspected of malpractices allows the officials to cover up cases.

Sad story of misuse of power. I was told some officers above the rank of circle inspectors personally called the liquor licenses and opened the shops and resealed after removing liquor And later got the benefit of share of profit. The inspections are only eyelash. The district head is liable to answer the public for the irregularities

Good time for Exercise dept. to pocket huge money in the name of COVID19 lockdown. How many honest exercise officers we have in DK or Karnataka? Forget from which political party. This is money making business same like police stopping 2 wheelers on blank spots on the roads. Do you think they are worried about people moving around in 2 wheelers during lock down? More vehicles out on the road during lock down, the more merry officers are.
    Jai Hind.

This whole exercise is a farce. How can thief ask another thief to find the culprit. The 'fence eating the crop' is going on right from the day India got independence. The department and the liquor vendors are like one family. Ofcourse with mutual consent some penalties will be levied.

Please catch hold of such people who were trying to make money and thinks of big profits amidst this lockdown . At one end there are people who are suffering and starving from not a single meal and then there are such people .
When I had asked for liquor for my personal enjoyment , I had been offered rates more than 2x or sometimes evens 3x the MRP.
DSP Black 600 rs for 2500. Old monk 450 rs for 2500. One pint of beer average costing 250. Such people were making money out of this situation. I out of urge and desperation had purchased one bottle of DSP black and one case of beer and I had to shell out 10.5k . I had never imagined in a hundred years , this situation would arise . Please look into it .

Many of our people appreciate Gujarat Model but when it comes to their liquor ban policy, they take reverse stand; citing reasons such as business loss, job loss and revenue loss to Govt etc.
Even Bihar C.M. Nitish Kumar has followed Gujarat Model.
How come Gujarat is making up the losses suffered from liquor ban?

Media spreaded lots of news regarding liquor stolen from sealed wine shops and Bars! They mentioned thiefs never touched cash but only liquor was stolen...!
Why not wine shop people can't break seal and sell liquor for 4-8 times more price?
Now to find find out the right culprit.. Thief himself complaining of stealing. Let police catch someone and fix.
Liquor Lords spent for party funds.
Let Political Gods nod thier heads for L.Ls.
