Coronavirus: Karnataka death toll mounts to 27, tally increases to 651


Bengaluru, May 4 (IANS): A man from Kalaburagi and a woman from Davangere succumbed to Covid-19 even as 37 new positive cases emerged in Karnataka on Monday, including 22 from Davangere alone, raising the state's tally to 651 and the toll to 27, an official said.

"Positive case 587, 56-year-old resident of Kalaburagi died at the designated hospital," the official said.

The state's 26th Covid death, the man had been admitted to a hospital on Wednesday with the known case of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI), cough and fever.

His X-ray examinations also diagnosed bilateral patchy pneumonitis.

With the new death, the Covid toll in Kalaburagi has risen to six.

A 48-year-old woman from Davangere succumbed to the virus on Monday afternoon.

"Positive case 651, 48-year-old female resident of Davangere expired at a designated hospital," said the official.

She was Davangere's second Covid death and the state's 27th.

Admitted in a hospital on Friday, she was diagnosed with SARI and also suffered from hypertension, diabetes and hypothyroidism.

Meanwhile, a spike in Covid cases in Davangere contributed 22 of the 37 new cases - 19 men and 18 women - which emerged in the past 24 hours.

In one shot, the new cases flung the district into the red zone.

Except one case with Influenza Like Illness (ILI), the rest in Davangere were contacts of earlier cases.

Among the Davangere cases, 12 are men and 10 women, including three children below 17.

Until Sunday 5 p.m., the district recorded only 10 cases, out of which two were discharged, seven active and one dead.

With the sudden spike, Davangere is now battling 28 active cases.

The other 15 cases emerged from Bidar (7), Mandya and Kalaburagi (2 each), Chikkaballapura, Haveri, Bengaluru Urban and Vijayapura (1 each).

Of the 15, three had a travel history to Mumbai, one to Hyderabad, two were contacts of earlier cases while all the seven Bidar cases were contacts of an earlier case.
