Bengaluru: After KSRTC bus fare issue, KPCC offers to pay rail travel cost of migrants

Bengaluru, May 4: After successfully prevailing upon the B S Yediyurappa-led BJP government in Karnataka to withdraw the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) decision to charge to and fro journey cost of migrant labourers for their travel following the relaxation of COVID 19 lockdown and finally deciding to offer free travel facility till May 7, the State Congress has now sought to up the ante by offering to pay for the rail travel costs of arranging Shramik Special Trains to bring back stranded people from different States.

The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), which had offered to pay Rs 1 crore and even presented a cheque for the amount to KSRTC, has now said it is ready to bear the monetary costs to be paid to Indian railways for arranging special trains to bring back people of the state stranded in different states.

On the suggestion of the Congress party high command, KPCC President D K Shivakumar and Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Siddaramaiah have in a letter to Chief Secretary T M Vijay Bhaskar, urged the State Government to arrange special trains to bring back people of Karnataka who have been stranded in different states.

“We are ready to bear the monetary costs to be paid to the Railways in our effort to help the cause Kannadigas and Karnataka. The State government may negotiate with the railways to strike a good deal so that more people can be brought back home. This would be a one-time effort,’’ they said in the letter.

It remains to be seen how the Yediyurappa regime and the Narendra Modi government responds to the initiative of the State Congress as similar offers were likely to be made by Congress party units in other States as well.

The right thing to do for the ruling Government was to arrange free travel to the people stranded in other states. Well that is not done but they are asking the stranded migrants to pay when they have not even have money for their daily sustenance.
DK Shivkumar is offering money to the railway department through check and not cash. Therefore I think it is not ill gotten money as you say. I appreciate the good will and compassionate gesture shown by DK Shivkumar irrespective of party affiliation.

The Congress party high command, KPCC President D K Shivakumar noble gesture for the suffering migrant worker is much appreciated in their difficult time

By withholding information on PM-CARES and the lock-down, the PMO has violated the RTI act. But Congress actions now forced the BJP spend the money to the poor without any elections that would have been spent on 'operation Kamala'.

As far as individual contribution of the party to the poor of India is acceptable. But using citizens donation for political publicity of BJP government with picture of PM Modi and party symbols are unacceptable.

There should be accountability and transparency for every rupee the citizens pay to the fund. If not 'PM Care fund' is nothing but another 'Gujarat Earthquake relief fund' that was used for BJP's election campaign.

See every party trying to take advantage of the situation for their vote bank politics, Congress is also in the race after lost many elections. DKS, one of the most corrupt politician talking about poor as he wants to come back to power and squash all the pending cases against him.
INC brought so many welfare schemes for the poor, minority appeasement schemes for vote bank. People remained poor remained till today, politicians and other middleman became richer day by day by scam ridden schemes.

It is good to see that Principal Opposition party is standing with the poor and playing a constructive role to bear the expenses of the ticket. Government is forced to change its decision to charge and this is a good development.

Instead of giving money to PM Cares Fund which is out of the purview of CAG and there is no transparency, it is better to help the poor people in this way. I have seen many of the social organisations are providing food to poor directly without any publicity.

On the other hand we have political parties providing food with lot of publicity. In some cases even the food from the government and Food items received from Sudha Murthy was repacked to have party sticker and distributed.

People are beginning to understand the motives of the rulers. This is a difficult time and such instances will remain with the people for long time.
