Moodbidri: Yeddyurappa Inaugurates Cultural Extravaganza ‘Alva's Virasat-2010’

  • Moodbidri, Jan 6: International Carnatic music exponent Dr M Balamurali Krishna was conferred the ‘Alva’s Virasat Award-2010’ on Wednesday January 6.

    The grand five-day cultural event ‘Alva’s Virasat-2010’ was inaugurated at Mijaru Shobavana on a colourfully decorated traditional stage, by chief minister B S Yeddyurappa.  

    This event which has been held over the past 14 years is recognized on a national-level for the performances by musicians and dancers of international standing.   

    Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said that the event serves to preserve tradition and Indian culture which is a great gift to the society and described the Virasat as a ‘reconciliation of Indian culture’.

     





































    “The state government is encouraging all the events representing tradition and culture such as the ‘Mysore Dasara’, ‘Kadamba Utsava’, ‘Karavali Utsava’, ‘Hampi Utsava’ and ‘Vijayanagar Utsava’, by encouraging folk and traditional artists”, said Yeddyurappa, adding that the Virasat helps everyone gain knowledge of Indian culture. 

    Expressing his happiness at participating in Alva’s Virasat, he said that such programmes are keeping people in touch with their culture amidst globalization and the effect of satellite channels. 

    Dr Balamurali Krishna was brought to the stage in a palanquin procession followed by traditional lights.  

    Dr D Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari of Dharmastala, presided over the function. Dr S Ramananda Shetty, vice-chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Dr N Vinay Hegde, chancellor of Nitte University, philanthropist and managing director of New Medical Centre in Abu Dhabi Dr B R Shetty, K Abhayachandra Jain, local MLA, K Amaranath Shetty, former minister, Ganesh Karnik MLC, and Mijaruguttu Ananda Alva were present. Dr M Mohan Alva, chairman of Alva’s Education Trust, welcomed all.

    After the inaugural, Tarun Bhattacharya performed a Santoor recital. Pt Abhijith Banerjee and Ustad Taufiq Qureshi accompanied him on ‘tabla’ and drums, respectively.  

    The venue located at Shobhavana, the Ayurvedic plantation in Mijar, has been decorated with colourful lights and attractive art pieces.
