Mangalore, Jan 8:
The thieves entered Lord Gopalakrishna Temple situated near Jodumutt in Car Street area, and took away gold and silver ornaments worth about Rs 3.5 lac, on the night of Thursday January 7. The temple management filed a complaint with the policemen in this regard on Friday.

The theft came to light when the temple priest arrived at the temple to perform the morning puja. He found that the lock of the front door of the temple had been broken. After entering the premises, he found the door of the sanctum sanctorum also having been forced open by the thieves. The puja paraphernalia kept inside the sanctum sanctorum was found to have been scattered around.

The thieves took away three aureoles of the Lord’s idol, made up of silver and a golden flute, which was in the hands of Lord Sri Krishna’s idol. Several silver items also have been taken away by the thieves. Approximately, 10 kgs of silver items have been stolen. The policemen said that the theft had occurred last night, when there was nobody in the temple. It is also found that the thieves came in by opening the front door, closed it from inside, and escaped from the rear door, after collecting the valuables. The temple, which has existed since generations, belongs to a family of Gowda Saraswat Brahmins. The idols and other items inside the temple have a high antique value.

Places of worship are very important and sacred. But, may be with the kind of education we receive, we do not believe in the sacredness of any items. Do our Gods want silver and gold anyway? No license to thieves but!

It is very unfortunate thing to happen in the heart of Mangalore city. There was a query by one of the Daijiworld readers couple of months ago for the same subject, is that- Why only Hindu and Christian churchs are targeted for stealing? May be the question is in bad taste or ignorance but doubt is natural and the answer is, there is no gold, silver,or any kind of ornment or valuables in masjids.Place of worship is very sensitive and the motive may be quick bucks, still people will not judge on that way, if culpurit belongs to from a particular religion. So police have to nab the criminal with out any time waste and bring to book.
