Mangaluru, May 10: Two more special trains carrying migrant labourers left from Mangaluru Junction here on Sunday May 10, a day after the first special train chugged off to Jharkhand from the city.

One train left to Uttar Pradesh in the afternoon at 2 pm, while the other departed to Bihar at around 5 pm.

Each train carried 1,140 passengers, totally 2,280 migrants.

The migrant labourers were brought to the train station by KSRTC buses from their camps and places of residence.

The migrants were subjected to medical test before being brought to the station.

So far 20,000 have registered online, among which 5,000 from are from Jharkhand, 3,000 from Uttar Pradesh and 4,000 from Bihar.

The special trains were pressed into service after Karnataka government decided to allow stranded migrant labourers to return to their native states on May 7. Though the state government had withdrawn the decision after discussions with builders, it decided to resume services following flak from various quarters.

Too little, too late. Bhakts are considering this as big achievement!

There is nothing to celebrate after putting the migrants to hardships all these days. There are about 40,000 migrants and only 5% have departed now.

It suppose to be done before the lock down.. y the urgency locking down in 4 hours Modi came on tv at 8 clock and 12 clock lock down.. he would have given at least 2 days so migrant would have returned safely... now lock is opened and migrants r going home.. !!! Govt suppose to bring back the migrants now... how to run the construction and industries without them... ?????
What is the purpose to open the lock... no workers to run the industries..... totally failure of management...

Migrants laborers, are packing their bags and leaving in hordes, for their hometowns !! This will certainly hit development, with skilled employees scampering, with no replacement, their will be an severe shortages of manpower, in real estate, factories and hotel industries !!!!

If this had been done 50 days ago, there wouldn't have been any migrants issues today. Migrants will return when situation normalizes.

Unfortunately some greedy people forgot that migrants have their own problems - no money for food, kicked out of their homes - so their safety was in their own towns and villages. They faced hardship on their way and no respite from the weather. Now suddenly when the bigwigs want to restart the economy -they remember the migrants ? Not as fellow human beings but as a tool to complete half-stalled work. Shame on our governments for promoting this nonsense.

They treated migrants like commodities. 50 days ago when the virus wasn't that widespread they coukd have sent them back. Now with them the migrants will take the virus with them to their villages.

When the times were good, entrepreneurs and real estate developers and factory owners did not pay these migrants enough. These labourers survived on a hand to mouth existence. When times went bad due to corona, they were discarded like a used period pad. With no savings and with no income, what can you expect these migrants to do? Silently suffer the exploitation and stay hungry in this high cost city?
Heck, even I will go to my hometown if I don't have steady income and no way to pay bills. Atleast, I will be nearer to my family and loved ones.

This is a lesson for the rich. You cannot exploit your workers during good times. You need to pay them enough during those good times when you yourself are minting money from your business. Then during tough times, these workers will have some savings to weather the storm even if you don't pay them for short periods...

    @ Rathan,

Bravo, now you want these migrants to stay back because there will be job. They stayed without job for more than 50 days and the government did not have the courtesy to look at their condition, no food and no money.

How can they will believe this government? If again lock-down is announced after the works started? They have lost faith in this government and survival is more important for them at this juncture.

Government is totally responsible for this situation.
