Mumbai, May 12: In an effort to decongest the jails all across the state, a high-powered committee that was appointed by the Maharashtra government has taken a decision to release 50 percent of the prisoners temporarily. This was decided on the wake of coronavirus pandemic, the state being the worst affected.

The committee was formed after the Supreme Court, in March, had directed to decongest the prisons all across the country due to the coronavirus outbreak. The committee comprised of Bombay high court justice A A Sayed, additional chief secretary of home department Sanjay Chahande, and Maharashtra director general prisons S N Pandey.

On Monday, May 11, the committee decided to release 50 percent of the prisoners temporarily on either bail or parole.

However, the prison authorities have not yet received any time frame to release the prisoners.
