Bengaluru, May 15: It is almost certain that the students will have to contend with reduced Dasara and Christmas holidays as the coming academic year will begin late.

In the past, the practice was to give 21 days’ holiday for Dasara. Some institutions managed by Christians used to divide this holiday and make room for 10 days of Christmas holidays. Even before that, Dasara holidays would be for 29 days. With the increase in academic classes, this holiday was cut by eight days to 21.

This time, the lockdown has played havoc with the time table of the academic year. The department is under compulsion to teach the lessons within the time available and to hold examinations for CCE, due to this the education department has planned to clip down certain holidays.

One of the proposals is to conduct full-day classes on Saturdays in place of the current half-day classes.

The ensuing academic year, as per the time table drawn by the Department of Public Instruction, is to begin on May 29. The education department is contemplating to hold classes by following social distancing. It proposes to concentrate on holding the SSLC examination first and then consider the opening of schools.
