New Delhi, May 17 (IANS): Following extension of the nationwide lockdown till May 31 during which metro train services will remain shut across the nation, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Sunday announced that it will continue to remain shut for commuters till this date.
The DMRC tweeted: "In light of the extension of the lockdown, Metro services will remain closed for commuters till May 31. Our helpline services 155370 shall also not be available. You may reach us at helpline@dmrc.org."
The Delhi government had written to the Centre, urging it to allow the Metro services in the city. However, it has demanded that only employees of the Union and city governments, Central and state PSUs, local bodies/government autonomous bodies, and persons providing essential services be allowed to travel on production of ID cards and passes. However, the Centre did not allow for the same and barred Metro services across the nation.
The DMRC was ready to resume its services, as and when approved by the Centre. With a network of 389-km across the national capital region, the Delhi Metro had ferried about 60 lakh people per day in February.
The Delhi Metro has been closed since March 22.
