Kolkata, Jun 9 (IANS): Kolkata-based Liberian footballer Ansumana Kromah and his wife had to face difficulties in admitting their unwell new-born daughter in a medical facility after hospitals refused to admit her as they were busy treating COVID-19 patients.

Kromah's new-born daughter Bintu is better now and at a Park Street Hospital, the footballer said.

Kromah, who led Peerless SC to a historic Calcutta Football League (CFL) Premier Division title last year, became a father last week but all was not well after the newborn developed jaundice symptoms over the weekend.

A few multi speciality private hospitals and one at Shambazar in North Kolkata could not admit her on Sunday morning, citing non availability of beds.

"She is much better today. We are waiting for the doctor's report," Kromah told IANS on Tuesday.

"I faced serious problems before I admitted her. I went to three different hospitals to admit my daughter but they refused to accept her because of corona patients. No beds anywhere," he added.

"Why don't all hospitals have beds for other sick patients...only corona patients. It is a very bad idea," Kromah said.

Kromah skippered Peerless to a historic CFL crown as for the first time since 1958 a club outside the Big Three -- Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting -- managed to clinch the title. He netted 13 goals, a performance that earned him a place in the East Bengal team which featured in the I-League last season.
