Udupi, Jun 17: A 22-year-old pregnant woman who has tested positive for the novel coronavirus underwent emergency caesarean delivery at Dr TMA Pai Hospital in Udupi on Wednesday. The woman, who hails from Karkala was admitted to the hospital on June 16. As per sources, she is in recovery and has delivered a healthy baby. The doctors stated that emergency surgery was performed due to obstetric reasons.
 
This is the first time that surgery for a corona-positive patient was performed in Udupi. The team of obstetric surgeons Dr Shashikala K Bhat and Dr Surbhi Sinha, and the anaesthesiologist Dr Roshan Shetty, were assisted by the nursing team of Veronica, Ashwini and Jayashree. Paediatric care was given to the newborn by Dr Ashish Gupta and Dr Chaitanya.

Dr TMA Pai Hospital at Udupi, an associated hospital of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, serving the district for more than 30 years, has been a dedicated coronavirus hospital from April 1. The hospital is providing free treatment to all corona-positive patients, including ICU care and surgeries.
