Mangalore, Feb 12: In a rare case in the medical history, a boy child born in 24th week of gestation on November 26, 2009 is surviving all odds and doing well at the diligent care of doctors at the Mangala Hospital here. The joy of Kairunisa, the mother of what can be called a miracle baby cannot be explained, but only experienced on witnessing her smile.
Dr Murali Keshava, paediatrician and neo-natalogist who lead the team of doctors in this case said Kairunisa of Jokatte near Mangalore delivered premature twin baby at NICU of the hospital. The weight of the first baby was one kg, while of the other 525 grams. The first baby lost life’s battle succumbing to severe infection after a month.
However, the mere 525 gms baby, which is kept in open care warmer has responded well from the last 77 days. What more little bundle of joy has gained another 400 grams.
According to Dr Murali the survival ratio of premature baby born in India is very low. They can suffer from problems such as breathing difficulty, severe infections, bleeding in the brain, ulcers in the intestines, infections of skin, jaundice and deafness such others. However, this baby though was of palms size was totally on parental nutrition and required only minimal respiratory support and medications, he said.
Further, most babies overpowered by nature rarely make it cradles, but this baby has amazed us so far battling all the complications, he points out.
