Modi deletes Weibo account as country bans 59 Chinese apps

New Delhi, Jul 1 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday deleted his account on Chinese social media app Weibo that had nearly 2.44 lakh followers, after the country banned 59 Chinese apps over national security concerns.

Reliable government sources told IANS that Modi decided to quit Weibo the moment the country announced the ban on 59 Chinese apps.

For VIP accounts, Weibo has a more complex procedure to quit which is why the official process was initiated, according to sources who added that for reasons best known to the Chinese, there was great delay in granting this basic permission.

"After the government's move of banning 59 Chinese apps, PM Modi exits from Chinese social media platform Weibo also... Strong message at the border, on the economic front & at personal level too," tweeted B.L. Santosh, BJP's General Secretary, Organisation).

All posts, images and comments on the Prime Mnister's Weibo account have been deleted, including two posts where he had photos with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Last month, known for government control and censorship, Chinese social media platforms removed Narendra Modi's speech and India's official statements on the border row. Modi's June 18 remarks about the country's border situation became inaccessible to users on social media app WeChat.

The Prime Minister's remarks came in the aftermath of the bloody faceoff in Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh in which 20 Indian soldiers lost their lives on June 15. The Chinese side has not yet revealed the number of casualties on its side.

MEA spokesman Anurag Srivastava's statement on the border row was also removed from the official WeChat account.

A message on WeChat said: "Unable to view this content because it violates regulations."

Ahead of his visit to China in 2015, Modi opened an account on Weibo, which is considered the Chinese equivalent of microblogging platform Twitter.

Two months ago, on April 18, the Indian government placed restrictions on the inflow of foreign direct investment (FDI) into India by Chinese investors.

After concerns were raised about a stake sale of 1.75 crore shares (representing 1% of the total equity capital) of HDFC to the People’s Bank of China (that country’s central bank) worth Rs 3,000 crore between January and March, the government modified rules governing foreign direct investment (FDI) through the “automatic route” to require companies based in countries that share land borders with India to secure prior government clearance for their investments.

Over the past three months, the country’s biggest telecom network and internet data services provider, Reliance Jio, has sold over a fifth of its stake to foreign investors, from private companies in the US to sovereign wealth funds in UAE and Saudi Arabia. While concerns arise over possible security implications of these investments, the Indian government has so far provided no answers.

Sales of stakes in a telecom company is a risk-prone area for the government of India. In this case, in addition to Jio Payments Bank that will run on SBI’s platform… on the SBI YONO App, Reliance may obtain access to SBI’s database and digital platform. This, in turn, would imply that the entire database of India’s biggest bank in the public sector would now be potentially available to Facebook and WhatsApp through their association with Reliance.

    1. Have any of the FDI proposals listed in the table above received security clearance from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs?

    2. Reliance Industries Limited, which is the parent company of Jio Platforms Limited, also has Jio Payments Bank Limited as a subsidiary. Through an agreement with the State Bank of India, Jio Payments Bank limited has access to the SBI’s account database and platform. Does foreign investment into a corporate group that has such access, constitute a threat to national security?

The need of the hour is to ban all non essential imports from this rogue country. That is the only way our people will learn to be self reliant and start making in India. Let us wait and see if the PM will take this bold step . Irrespective of party and religion people will support him if dares to do this.

Make this permanent as even other Chinese businesses. There is no benefit in having friendship with communist and expansionist regime. It will only bring trouble unless China becomes Democratic Rebulic wth amended constitution. Closing the Chinese embassy in India is even a better welcome step.
