Bangalore, February 20: The government and private engineering college in the state finalized the fee structure for this year’s CET on Friday February 19. The government and managements settled for 50-50 arrangement with only change being fee for general merit engineering candidates has been increased by Rs 5,000 to Rs 30,000 per year.

The government quota in the seat-sharing ratio for minority institutions will be 45 per cent with private managements getting the rest. Announcing this, state higher education minister Aravind Limbavali said that the fees for general merit candidates has been increased after the managements expressed concerns on expenses involved in providing quality education.”

However, fees for the “poor meritorious” category will remain the same as last year’s Rs 15,000 per year with government agreeing to pay an additional Rs 10,000 directly to the managements for each seat in the category with subsidy amounting to total Rs 5 crore. “Students who have secured a rank beyond 20,000 with a family annual income of Rs 2 lakh or less will be eligible for the poor meritorious quota,” said Limbavali.

This year’s CET counselling too will be carried out in three rounds over 65 days and students who have completed their second PUC through supplementary examinations too can participate. Students who have completed their diploma courses and are seeking admission through lateral entry into the counselling procedure will also be eligible for the poor meritorious quota.

Limbavali said the admission and fee fixation committee for CET 2011 will be set up soon in accordance with the Union Human Resource Development Ministry’s new guidelines.

It would be a wonderful idea to reserve seats to Kannadigas or Mangaloreans, but who gives assurance to minorities that they won't be victims of state-sponsored attacks? Mallus work hard and do less harm, may be they enter as "Indians" not as majority or minority. It is time for us to wake and imitate the minority so that "the majority" can invest in social services and begin re-conversion of people to an enlightened religion that upholds fundamental human freedom. After all all education should lead us to recognize equality and fundamental worth of everyone.

I am paying for my wards merit seat @ Rs. 30000/- per year. Where is 5000? Just eye wash. Education is nothing but money making. Highest bidder gets the seat. so mallus pay high and get seats. Is there a system of reservation for children of karnataka in these institutions????
