Bengaluru: Minister warns private hospitals unwilling to treat coronavirus patients

Bengaluru, Jul 6: State minister for medical education, Dr K Sudhakar, has warned private hospitals refusing to treat coronavirus patents of filing criminal cases agains them. He was addressing a press conference after returning to Vidhana Spudha after visiting the Jayanagar public hospital and Rajiv Gandhi Chest Diseases Hospital on Sunday July 5. He had visited these hospitals in view of certain complaints.

"The government is already in discussions with private hospitals. The private hospitals, as against the promise of providing 2,734 beds for COVID treatment, have given only 116 beds to us till now. I urge them to handover the remaining beds at the earliest," he stated. He also warned that hospitals which turn away patients without treatments will be sued.

The minister expected the coronavirus situation to come under control since Monday and asked people facing problems in getting admitted or having problems with test reports to contact helpline 1912 which serves people round the clock.

"I have noticed some reports saying that a sum of Rs 4,000 to 4,500 is being collected from people for coronavirus tests. The government has conducted over six lac tests till now without charging anything. The private hospitals should collect only Rs 2,200 from patients not referred by the government. If they collect exorbitant charges, steps will be taken against them," he added.

    Sir, you give warnings. But, private hospitals show "don't care" attitude..... Only rich will survive and few poor with little immunity will recover after suffering like hell...One more ex. yesterday one lady died for not getting admission in any hospital... Why then arranged so many beds?

    Cynthia, it's best for a common man to die a sudden death at home where even after spending your life's savings they will hand over a dead body!
    Imagine admitting a patient with renal failure for CORONA treatment & billing 15 lacs for 15 days when they knew survival chances are almost nil, then handing over a corpse?

    Rudy sir, i too agree with you the same.... Whatever little saving an ordinary person does out of great difficulty will go in water if he suffers with grave illnesses.....we should not suffer and should not depend on anybody...and should die out of a sudden death....

    Corporate hospitals are worst than extortionists! I have read lots of horror stories in Mumbai where parties were billed 15lacs for 15 days when they knew patient is almost dead; in another case one hospital extracted 88 thousand for 8 hours & then brought out dead body from a poor patient, over & above that they were demanding ambulance fees! Recently somewhere in North, a poor patient was beaten to death by hospital employees after he didn't succumb to their demands of extra charges! All these stories send a chill down the spine! Only rich can afford hospitals! Common man better for suddenly at home before falling prey to these monsters!
    Unless the entire system is purged & cleant there seems to be no hope for the common man!

    Surjeet, warning is only for public consumption... they don’t care, big money is invested. Why don’t you NAME & SHAME these hospitals which at such a critical time are refusing patients .? Were these very same Private Commercial Establishments charging the helpless patients ridiculous amounts in the guise of unwanted tests ?

    We need constructive implementation of order.The hospitals are close to politicians or politicians owned.The situation is worst and statement put oil to wounds. Before people wale government and administration should set the things right. Is it only one politician mr siddharamiah knows hurts and wounds of people. But statement no use uless some concrete results
    Mr Siddharamiah it is not enough hit and run case. If such things continue people lose faith in politics
