Bengaluru: CM launches Nekar Samman Yojane; cash transfer to 19,744 weavers

Bengaluru, Jul 6: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Monday launched the Nekar Samman Yojane by direct transfer of Rs 2000 financial assistance to the bank accounts of 19,444 weavers in the first phase.

Under the fourth national handloom census, Karnataka has 54,789 registered handloom weavers. The silk, cotton and woollen handloom weavers and other handloom weavers engaged in allied activities are eligible for the Nekar Samman Yojane.

The State Government has earmarked to Rs 10.96 crore for distribution under the Nekar Samman Yojane annually, the Chief Minister said.

Launching the direct benefit transfer to the bank accounts of the weavers under the Nekar Samman Yojane from his home office of Krishna in Bengaluru, Yediyurappa said weavers left out of the national census of handloom weavers can be included later.

As many as 40,634 handloom weavers have enrolled themselves under the SevaSindhu software in Karnataka, the Chief Minister said disclosing that applications from as many as 37,314 weavers have been scrutinized and approved so far.

The remaining eligible beneficiaries will be covered in the coming days, the Chief Minister said and they will get direct transfer of Rs 2,000 each into their bank accounts per year.

In addition, Yediyurappa said as many as 1.25 lakh daily wage labourers employed in the powerloom units will also be provided an one-time payment of Rs 2,000 each. Of these, 8,997 applications have already been approved and the amount has been transferred to their bank accounts so far.

Textile Minister Shrimanth Balasaheb Patil said the Nekar Samman Yojane was a boon to the handloom weavers.

Textiles, handlooms and MSME as well as Information and Publicity Department Principal Secretary M Maheshwar Rao, Handlooms and Textile Department Commissioner Upendra Pratap Singh and other senior officials participated in the programme.


Babu Jagjivan Ram honoured

Earlier, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa paid homage to former Prime Minister BabuJagjivan Ram by garlanding the statue in front of VidhanaSoudha as a mark of respect.

Deputy Chief Minister Govind M Karjol, Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai and former Social Welfare Minister H Anjaneya and other dignitaries accompanied the Chief Minister.
