Mangaluru: Two succumb to coronavirus, DK death toll reaches 28

Mangaluru, Jul 8: Two people died of coronavirus in Dakshina Kannada district on Wednesday July 8.

The deceased have been identified as 62-year-old woman from Ullal, and a 32-year-old woman from Puttur.

The two women passed away at Wenlock, the district Covid hospital.

Both were suffering from various ailments and were being treated in the ICU. 

With this, the total number of deaths due to coronavirus in the district has risen to 28.

As per the district bulletin on Tuesday July 7, 1,359 coronavirus positive cases have been recorded in the district out of which 650 were active.

    The WHO has previously said the virus that causes the COVID-19 respiratory disease spreads primarily through small droplets expelled from the nose and mouth of an infected person that quickly sink to the ground.

    But in an open letter to the Geneva-based agency, published on Monday in the Clinical Infectious Diseases journal, 239 scientists in 32 countries outlined evidence that they say shows floating virus particles can infect people who breathe them in.


    Because those smaller exhaled particles can linger in the air, the scientists in the group had been urging WHO to update its guidance.

    “We wanted them to acknowledge the evidence,” said Jose Jimenez, a chemist at the University of Colorado who signed the paper.

    “This is definitely not an attack on the WHO. It's a scientific debate, but we felt we needed to go public because they were refusing to hear the evidence after many conversations with them,” he said in a telephone interview.

    Speaking at Tuesday's briefing in Geneva, Benedetta Allegranzi, the WHO's technical lead for infection prevention and control, said there was evidence emerging of airborne transmission of the coronavirus, but that it was not definitive.

    “...The possibility of airborne transmission in public settings - especially in very specific conditions, crowded, closed, poorly ventilated settings that have been described, cannot be ruled out,” she said.

    “However, the evidence needs to be gathered and interpreted, and we continue to support this.”

    Jimenez said historically, there has been a fierce opposition in the medical profession to the notion of aerosol transmission, and the bar for proof has been set very high. A key concern has been a fear of panic.

    “If people hear airborne, healthcare workers will refuse to go to the hospital,” he said. Or people will buy up all the highly protective N95 respirator masks, “and there will be none left for developing countries.”

    In 2018 alone, the country reported around 151 thousand fatalities due to road accidents, which comes to 430 deaths per day; compare with Covid19 fatalities (26500 till date), which are mostly indirect deaths caused by comorbitdites!

    This airborne virus is spreading full blown & like any other flu virus anybody can catch it so this breakdowns, quarantine etc. will not work especially in a overpopulated country like India!
    Supposedly, the transmission of the virus will be much more vigorous in ill ventilated closed environments due to aerosol suspension & the chances of catching infection are very high than in openly ventilated areas!
    This end result was inevitable due to confusing guidelines because of lack of understanding of the virus!
    Unnecessary panic was created which itself may have caused many deaths!
    SOCIOECONOMIC EFFECTS OF CORONA CONUNDRUM WILL BE VERY PAINFUL AND PROLONGED DOING MUCH MORE DAMAGE THAN THE COVID19 FLU ITSELF!

    As I had spec updated confidently about nobody escaping covid19 due to it being "airborne transmitted" like any other viral flu, please read the latest findings:

    New Delhi: The World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday acknowledged the emerging evidence of airborne spread of COVID-19 after an open letter by over 200 scientists gave evidence that the virus floated and remained suspended in the air.

    “The possibility of airborne transmission in public settings – especially in very specific conditions, crowded, closed, poorly ventilated settings that have been described, cannot be ruled out,” Benedetta Allegranzi, WHO’s technical lead for infection prevention and control, said at a virtual press conference.
    "However, the evidence needs to be gathered and interpreted, and we continue to support this,” she added.

    “There is significant potential for inhalation exposure to viruses in microscopic respiratory droplets (microdroplets) at short to medium distances (up to several meters, or room scale), and we are advocating for the use of preventive measures to mitigate this route of airborne transmission,” the open letter said.

    Until now, it was accepted that the disease transmitted through droplets through nose, eyes and mouth.

    All are confused in Karnataka because of Corona Virus. Even the State Government looks as if confused now. They don't know what to do and how to control. Very tough job ahead. If they do not take proper steps .it will be a disaster very soon.

    The rising spike, subsequent deaths, due to Covid19 pandemic, in Dakshin Kannada district, is extremely worrisome..... The administration must extensively conduct random testing, the urgent need of the hour is to clampdown, total Lockdown status.
    New arrivals from middle east regions are on schedule, therefore Karnataka should not have the dubious reputation, of my state of Maharashtra, where the situation is precariously hurtling towards total desperation !!!!!

    Government should take decision to lockdown. They are waiting all people to die. We have to travel everyday to college with risk or else no attendance to write exams.if lockdown atleast we can stay at home.. aged people at home.

    Where are our representatives who were mocking our neighbouring state.!! It's a shame that even during this pandemic our representatives were settling their political scores. Maturity is when Kerala didn't respond to their tantrums and we're busy concentrating on contact tracing, rapid testing and improving the infrastructure for handling the crisis.

    Assume a person has high diabetes or any other morbidity. That person gets covid and passes away. Now one may say that the person had other conditions so it's not because of the virus. What is to be understood is that the virus worsened his condition that had he not have contracted the virus, he would have probably survived. It's not like every person who has kidney disease or anything else will die. If a person has covid and if the person clearly died of causes which are not related to covid, then it is not considered as a covid death.

    They boast about the number of beds. How many full fledged ventilator beds are actually available? Regular beds are only for mild cases. Authorities need to focus more on serious cases, whether they are receiving proper care and other intensive facilities.

    Only lockdown till month end may reduce the cases. Because one or another person from every family go out and mingle with public for different reason . And infect others in family. And however nobody gets the full salary after working entire month in present situation, So it's better to be at home. At least people will be safe.
