Fire-hit Bangalore Towers Sealed - Cases Booked against Owners

Bangalore, Feb 24 (IANS) The charred Carlton Towers in Bangalore were sealed a day after a major fire broke out Tuesday claiming nine lives and injuring about 50 people, a fire brigade official said Wednesday.

"We have sealed the entire premises to investigate the cause of the fire and ascertain whether the seven-storey building had fire safety systems in place," Bangalore Fire Brigade director D.B. Chengappa told IANS.

The police also booked cases of negligence and culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the building owners.

"The government has ordered an inquiry in the fire mishap and directed the Bangalore Bruhat Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to review fire safety measures in all high-rise buildings across the city," Chengappa said.

Of the injured, seven are in the intensive care unit at the nearby Manipal Hospital and 15 are in the medical ward. The remaining were discharged earlier in the day.

"No further casualties. Seven of the critically injured are being treated in the ICU while 15 others are under observation in the medical ward. Rest have been sent home," a hospital source said.

Of the nine people who died, six were men and three were women.

Jenifer, Mangalore, I agree with you for making the owner of the building responsible for the entire loss of lives and property, except for storing diesel on the terrace. Diesel was stored for the generator due to irregular power supply. Our Energy Minister Eshewarappa is responsible for the storage of Diesel. Had he given the regular uninterrupted Power supply to the people of karnataka, as we got for the past 60 years of congress ruling Karnataka, this diesel issue would not have erupted.

The owner of the building should prosecute the energy minister in this regard. Eashwarappa cannot provide us electicity, VS ACharya cannot give us security, Yediyurappa cannot retain his Chair of CM as its three legs are held by three Reddy brothers and the fourth one is held by Shobha. Anyone leaves it, and Yeddy will collapse. Will the BJP be able to survive in the state?

    Vishwa,

Do you say that the owner of the building has no responsibility for ensuring safety measures ? If my house catches fire for some reason, am I responsible for the carelessness or the govt.? If your vehicle catches fire, won't you sue the manufacturer or will you hold the govt. responsible ? If one is hit while crossing the railway track, won't he be punished for trespassing than compensating by the railways ? I am totally against govt funds to be used to compensate - the owner of the building must be made to pay. The latest findings is that huge quantity of diesel was stored on the terrace of the building - I wonder if he ever insured the building !

Jenifer, I think you don't know what you are writing. when you are telling flood affected people have to be compensated it is obious that these people also need to be compnensated right. ultimately both are karnataka people.

When flood was affected it was mass casuality and centre assisitance is required. But these casuality can be handled localy

Its good that the investigation will take place. The owner of the building must be made to compensate for the loss of lives to the families/kin because it is he who benefited from the rental income. It is too autonomous of the CM to have offered compensation to the families - Karnataka Govt got nothing to do with the tragedy - tax payers money should not be used for this purpose. When it was required for natural disaster i.e. flood affected people North Karnataka, he waited for Central Govt to release funds. Why double standards ?
