Dalit man stripped, assaulted in Vijayapura for 'touching' bike

Vijayapura, Jul 20 (IANS): A 32-year-old Dalit man was allegedly stripped and assaulted by a group of 13 youth in Karnataka's Vijayapura for reportedly touching a motorbike of an upper-caste owner, police said on Monday.

"On a complaint by the Dalit victim (Kashinath Talwar), we have booked the 13 accused and investigating the incident, which occurred at Minajgi village near Talikoti on July 18," Vijayapura district superintendent of police Anupam Agarwal told reporters here.

"Though Talwar claimed that he touched the bike by mistake and pleaded for mercy, he said the accused severely thrashed him with sticks and footwear and took off his pants while he lay on the road haplessly," Agarwal said, citing from the victim's 2-page complaint in Kannada.

A video clip of the assault went viral on the social media and triggered outrage in the district against the upper caste accused, as the intervention by the victim's parents did not stop them from carrying the assault. Vijayapura is 524 km northwest of Bengaluru.

"A case has been registered against the accused under the SC/ST Act and the relevant sections of the IPC (Indian Penal Code) on the assault complaint," said Agarwal.

Talwar's father Yankappa also alleged that he, his wife and their daughter were also attacked by the accused when they tried to rescue him from being brutally assaulted.

In a related development, two-three women in the village also filed a complaint with the police against Talwar for alleged eve-teasing and 'flashing' before them.

"We have summoned Talwar to inquire about his conduct as the women alleged that he teased them, touched them inappropriately and exposed his private parts while they were washing clothes outside their houses," Agarwal said.

Talwar is a daily wage worker in the village.

Indian citizen has to change their mentality. Religion is not created by GOD. People should learn from COVID-19. It does not see cast, rich or poor, politician or celebrities. Please should stop this attitude of troubling Dalit. They are the creation of God. Those people involved in this to be punished. We should have a strict law and order then only our country will improve. We are still 100 years beyond present world. Even educated people involved in this type of incidents in India.

PM thanked scavengers during Kumbha mela for their karma yog and their role in keeping the Kumbh clean. Even when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Modi had called the work of sanitation workers a "spiritual experience," It clearly shows his mindset on adherence to caste system.

Many viruses have come and gone, but this century old virus of caste system will never go. As Dr Ambedkar said "As long as caste system is there, there will be atrocities on dalits and as long as Hindu religion is there, caste system will continue" It is a subject, which has no ending. The President is a dalit, that is only a token, he is chosen just for vote bank politics and even he is afraid to talk against this system openly.

Discrimination within the community is one of the key factors for mass conversion and led for decline in the number of hindu population for long run. Rightwing hindutva groups should watch out the threat instead blaming minorities for the development.

In BJP ruled Madhya Pradesh cops brutally assault Dalit couple, kids and kin for resisting removal of encroachment. In UttarKhand the Indian Dalit man killed for eating in front of upper-caste men.

Atrocities on Dalits and tribals up by 70% in Gujarat between 2003 and 2018; conviction rate below 5% in Modi's first 3 yrs as PM. Over decade, crime rate against Dalits up 25%, cases pending investigation up 99%. Atrocities on Dalits in Gujarat have been rising steadily in the last two decades with the state witnessing a 72 percent increase in the number of registered cases between 2003 and 2018.

As per the organisation Navsarjan Trust carried out a four-year-long study - published in 2010 - recording 98 untouchability practices in nearly 1,600 villages in Gujarat.

Most of the findings were startling, for example:

More than 90% of the villages banned temple entry to Dalits
54% of government schools had a separate queue for Dalit children for the midday school lunch
64% of village councils had Dalit members sitting separately and being given separate tea cups or glasses
In 96% of villages, Dalits did not have access to burial grounds

In Karnataka under CM Yedurappa BJP governance caste certificate for 'Brahmin' and lynching of 'Dalit' for touching the upper caste bike.

If 'Dalits' of India don't enjoy the constitutional rights in India, how the BJP government in the center will accommodate prosecuted minorities from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh under new CAA bill?

As I went through the report,I understood that here it is not of touching their holy bike, but probably he approached women ,touched them and exposed before them.what is right or wrong ,is hardly to believe.whatever it is I find it is inhuman that way to treat stripping assault.Day by day India is going back to rootes. As the man was assaulted someone could call the police to lessen their activities. No video was important simply let man suffer.Police too let him come to police,.They could too go to him to see whats going on.sad.whether women too lied?
