Mangaluru, Jul 21: Movement of vehicles on the city roads has come down due to lockdown and the fear about getting infected with coronavirus. At the same time, there has been a marked increase in those who try to use this opportunity to violate traffic rules and indulge in misadventures on empty roads.

There is a general belief that the traffic police do not remain alert enough about the happenings on the roads because of markedly reduced traffic. This belief is the root cause for indulging in dangerous traffic violations and other things. Young people are seen moving in vehicles at high speed against the traffic flow, three people travelling in two-wheelers, not wearing helmets, desisting from wearing seat belts, negligent and high speed driving etc.

Many have also pointed out that delivery boys delivering food, provisions etc to customers are seen hurriedly moving on the roads, totally neglecting road rules, in order to cover the distance as fast as possible.

However, assistant commissioner of police (traffic) Manunath Shetty, said that the traffic police always keep an eye on the movements on the roads. He said that at places where policemen are not present, auto machines capture the photos and videos and the owners of vehicles get notices. He said that even during the lockdown period, about 100 to 200 cases are being registered every day for traffic violations in the city limits.
