Mangaluru: Protective fencing to Ullal bridge - Completion likely in three months

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jul 25: The protective fencing being provided to Ullal bridge on national highway 66 in the backdrop of the loss of several lives there, is going on a quick pace and it is likely to be completed in three months. Mangalore Urban Development Authority has been executing this project.

The bridge, which is 800 metres long, comprises two bridges, one to allow traffic towards Thokkottu and the other for traffic bound for the city. The fence is being provided to both these bridges. The work has now been completed to the extent of 75 per cent on one side of the bridge. The fencing is five feet high with additional barbed fencing of one foot at the top. To stop people from climbing the fence, the barbed fence is also bent towards the bridge in the shape of an arc.

The demand for the fence had been raised many times because of frequent suicides from the bridge. The demand got added support after V G Siddhartha, founder of Cafe Coffee Day, jumped into Netravati river from this bridge on July 29 last year. After the fence is completed, CCTV cameras will be installed.

The work was inaugurated by MLA D Vedavyas Kamath, on July 4. Kamath said that he expects the work to be completed within the allotted period of three months. He expressed happiness at having kept the promise of providing fencing to this bridge.

A safety railing for ensuring no willful trespass should be at-least 6 to 7 feet tall and should have only vertical bars which will be slippery to deter climbing with a inward projection at the top to prevent a cross jump over. Any horizontal bars, ties or diamond mesh as shown in the photo helps climbing. Of-course stainless-steel is preferred or a anti corrosive treated material for long lasting. Prefer better sense to prevail. Saves all this

Instead of thus decent and beautiful metal fencing barbed wire should have been used.Still one more tender can be called for that....Barbed wire works good and may discourage jumpers...

Unless it is constructed with stainless steel material it is sure to catch rust and get destroyed within a few months so that there will be one more project to repair, replace the current barrier.

Wrong decision and unplanned project. People will laugh/make fun by looking itself for those who taken this decision and approved.

instead of fence try to find solution for unemployment, industrial development, low interest loan to youths for startup business, agriculture and support distress people.

Waste of public money, if anyone wants to die he or she will find so many ways, and this gates seem like easy to climb and jump higher than earlier bridge.

This is utterly non planned project and non engineered project. As they installing iron materials there is high chance of getting rust. So it will not last long. Looks like this is nothing but it's a commission business. Need to replan this work.
