Mumbai, Mar 9:
An 18-member delegation of the women’s wing of the Nationalist Congress Party led by president of the Maharashtra Pradesh, Surekha Thakre, met Governor K Sankaranarayanan at Raj Bhavan on the occasion of International Women’s Day on Monday March 8.

The delegation informed the Governor that female foeticide is a matter of serious concern and even in a progressive state like Maharashtra there are many cases of killing of the girl child.

Members of the delegation said that sex determination tests had further aggravated this social problem. The delegation also told the Governor that Maharashtra has a sex ratio of 933 women per 1000 live male births as against Kerala where the ratio is 1058 women per 1000 men.

Despite laws to prevent killing of the girl child, the evil practice of female foeticide continues unchecked, they said. The delegation urged the Governor to take stringent measures to prevent the killing of the girl child.

Appreciating the concern shown by the women on the issue of female foeticide, the Governor assured them that he will take up the matter with the state government.

Bharati Lavhekar and other office-bearers of the Rashtravadi Mahila Congress Party from various parts of the city were present on the occasion.
