Mangaluru, Aug 5: The undivided twin-districts of Karnataka, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada, received rainfall throughout the day on Tuesday August 4. As the rainfall is expected to continue, the meteorological department has issued red alert on Wednesday August 5.

Both the district headquarters experienced copious rainfall on Tuesday, which increased in the evening. All the taluks in the two districts reported heavy rainfall. Houses of Gangu Sesappa at Nadaje in Badagulipady gram panchayat within Kaikamba Ganjimath was damaged after a tree fell on her house. Similarly, the house of Jayakar in Poopadikallu in Badaga Yedapadavu village was damaged by a fallen tree. Four houses in Kundapur taluk also suffered damages.

Artificial floods inundated several villages and agricultural fields. Rivers including Sauparnika in Udupi district are overflowing. Kodagu district also got heavy rainfall.

Hosanagara in Shivamogga district recorded highest rainfall of 21 cm with Kollur recording 20 cm. Places situated in the Western Ghats received rainfall of around 15 cm on an average while the places located in the coastal belt got six to seven cm rainfall. The meteorological department has said that monsoon will get strengthened due to the low pressure area formed over the northern side of the Bay of Bengal and therefore, monsoon will gain momentum for the next four to five days.

Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services said it expects waves as high as 3 to 3.6 metres to lash the seashore between 11.30 pm onward on Wednesday. It has advised people living close to the sea and remain cautious.
