Mangaluru: ‘No cultural programmes in this Independence Day celebrations’ - DC

Mangaluru, Aug 6: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner (DC) Dr K V Rajendra, said that cultural programmes will not feature in the district level Independence Day celebrations this year. He said that this decision has been taken in view of the fact that coronavirus infection cases are on the rise.

He was speaking at a meeting connected with preparations for the Independence Day celebrations held on Wednesday August 5 at the auditorium of his office. He added that at the district level programme being held at Nehru Maidan, there is no provision for large number of people to take part. He requested the people to stay at their homes and thereby express their patriotism. "We will be airing the district level function through social websites. Arrangement will also be made to beam the function through digital screen installed at an important circle in the city," he stated.

He advised the people to exercise caution when celebrating Independence Day, not to put together large crowds for the function, to maintain social distance, and to wear masks, all of which are compulsory.

He said that the district administration plans to identify and felicitate civic workers, ASHA workers, sanitation worker, police personnel and doctors who have been serving the society in a stellar way during this difficult time when the COVID pandemic is spreading, on the occasion of Independence Day celebrations.

Additional deputy commissioner Roopa M J, probationary IAS officer Mona, and officials of different departments participated in the meeting.

    Good and wise decision by deputy commissioner Dr. K V Rajendra. This is need of the hour as the entire world is going through this crisis of Covid-19. Even now many cases of this deadly disease is still on the rise in many parts of the world including Karnataka. These cultural programmes can wait.
