Dubai: Mangalore Konkans Announce Rs 10 Lac Award Fund in Memory of Wilfy Rebimbus

Dubai, Mar 21: Mangalore Konkans, pioneers in Konkani stage shows in Dubai, announced that they have instituted an award for excellence in Konkani Music in memory of the late Wilfy Rebimbus. The award which has been established with Sandesha, an institution under the diocese of Mangalore, will be awarded to a deserving candidate, who has contributed immensely to Konkani Music, by way of his/her own compositions of Konkani songs, hymns or devotional songs, release of CDs or albums, or Konkani musical programmes with original Konkani lyrics.
“This award so instituted will remain for many years to come and is a befitting tribute to the late Wilfy Rebimbus who dedicated his entire life for the progress of Konkani music” said Manohar Pais one of the members of Mangalore Konkans, while announcing the award.
In addition to the award for excellence in Music, Mangalore Konkans Dubai have also set aside a fund to help the economically poor students who pursue B. A. studies at Sandesha with Music/ Dance combination so that they will make a living for themselves and their needy families besides contributing their creative talent to the fields of music and dance. A fund for Rs.10 lacs has been established towards the above.
A holy mass concelebrated by Rev. Fr. Freddie D’souza, was offered at St. Mary’s Church in Dubai for the repose of the departed soul of the late Wilfy, followed by a short ceremony to pay tribute. It was attended by members of the Konkani community in large numbers besides members of Mangalore Konkans, led by President Mr. Santosh Nazareth. The hymns were aptly chosen and melodiously presented by St. Cecelia’s Konkani Choir group under the leadership of Kethan D’souza.
Wilfy was a great artiste with original ideas, and will be greatly missed by every Konkani speaking mangalorean said Mr. Francis Fernandes Cascia, an ace dramatist in his speech.
“He was a simple kind hearted man with original compositions parallel to none said Mr. Joseph Mathias, an accomplished businessman, while speaking during the occasion.
“Wilfy was a great gift given to lovers of Konkani music by God and we were quite fortunate to have him in our midst during the past several decades. He was a kind hearted person simple and down to earth, and no composer can come close to his standard in terms of lyrics” said Valerian Peris, a senior member of Mangalore Konkans in his speech. Also, Olivia Rodrigues and Arthur Pereira paid their respect to the late singer Wilfy in the form of poetry.
