Dubai, Mar 21: Mangalore Konkans, pioneers in Konkani stage shows in Dubai, announced that they have instituted an award for excellence in Konkani Music in memory of the late Wilfy Rebimbus.  The award which has been established with Sandesha, an institution under the diocese of Mangalore, will be awarded to a deserving candidate, who has contributed immensely to Konkani Music, by way of his/her own compositions of Konkani songs, hymns or devotional songs, release of CDs or albums, or Konkani musical programmes with original Konkani lyrics.

“This award so instituted will remain for many years to come and is a befitting tribute to the late Wilfy Rebimbus who dedicated his entire life for the progress of Konkani music” said Manohar Pais one of the members of Mangalore Konkans, while announcing the award.

In addition to the award for excellence in Music, Mangalore Konkans Dubai have also set aside a fund to help the economically poor students who pursue B. A. studies at Sandesha with Music/ Dance combination so that they will make a living for themselves and their needy families besides contributing their creative talent to the fields of music and dance.  A fund for Rs.10 lacs has been established towards the above.

A holy mass concelebrated by Rev. Fr. Freddie D’souza, was offered at St. Mary’s Church in Dubai for the repose of the departed soul of the late Wilfy, followed by a short ceremony to pay tribute.   It was attended by members of the Konkani community in large numbers besides members of Mangalore Konkans, led by President Mr. Santosh Nazareth.  The hymns were aptly chosen and melodiously presented by St. Cecelia’s Konkani Choir group under the leadership of Kethan D’souza.

Wilfy was a great artiste with original ideas, and will be greatly missed by every Konkani speaking mangalorean said Mr. Francis Fernandes Cascia, an ace dramatist in his speech.

“He was a simple kind hearted man with original compositions parallel to none said Mr. Joseph Mathias, an accomplished businessman, while speaking during the occasion.

“Wilfy was a great gift given to lovers of Konkani music by God and we were quite fortunate to have him in our midst during the past several decades.  He was a kind hearted person simple and down to earth, and no composer can come close to his standard in terms of lyrics” said Valerian Peris, a senior member of Mangalore Konkans in his speech.  Also, Olivia Rodrigues and Arthur Pereira paid their respect to the late singer Wilfy in the form of poetry.

IT was a noble thought of Mangalore Konkans to pay tribute to Late Wilfi Rebimbus with holy mass, followed by a emotional ceremony to offer “Shradhanjali” to the departed Legend. Well attended by large crowd at church hall marked respect for the late Legend. Speakers specially Mr. Francis Fernandes Cassia & Mr. Joseph Mathais spoke well and took the people down the memory lane.
The “Shradhanjali” to Late Wilfy Rebimbus, a well organised meaningful ceremony. The highlight was Mangalore Konkan’s announcement of the institution of award for excellence in Konkani Music in memory of Music Legend Late Wilfy Rebimbus to be awarded to the outstanding candidate who can make original contribution to the Konkani Music.
“Congratulation” to Mangalore Konkans for their thoughtful act of instituting this award. They not only instituted the award, but also made enough funds available and their tie up with the well known organisation “Sandesh” to make sure that the deserving candidate gets the award. I am sure, this noble gesture of Mangalore Konkans will not only remain in the minds of people forever but also encourage many youngsters to follow in the foot step of the Legend. This wonderful gesture is the TRUE TRIBUTE to the late KONKAN KOGUL who spent all his life in creating a permanent place in the history for Konkani Literature and Music. Wise thought and creative concept by the Mangalore Konkans.
May Wilfy’s soul rest in peace.

Thanks Mangalore Konkans for the kind thought of holding a mass and public tribute. On another note I fully endorse what Dr. Edward Nazareth has commented about helping Wilfy’s Family. What a great wealth Wilfyab has left behind for us to enjoy in his songs and Konkani culture. Now it is our turn to pay back with gratitude. One could easily imagine the huge cost that must have been incurred by the family for his treatment for more than a year. I think helping Meenabai financially would be our best tribute to Wilfyab.

IT IS REALLY INVOLVED WITH THE LOVE AND REGARDS TO THE EVER LASTING HERO OF KONKANS AND WHATEVER WE DO IS VERY LITTLE COMPARED TO THE HARD EFFORTS OUR DEAREST WILFY HAD UNDERGONE TO BRING KONKANI CULTURE TO A VERY HIGH LEVEL. WELL DONE TO THE STEPS TAKEN BY THE PERSONALITIES BEHIND THIS TRIBUTE. LONG LIVE THE SONGS OF WILFY IN US.

The memorial service organised by Mangalore Konkans for the departed soul of our beloved Wilfy Rebimbus, was truely commendable. Each one had something very beautiful to mention on the life of Wilfyab and his passion for music which indeed touched the hearts of everyone present there. Surely, he deserves this act of gratitude from all his music lovers. I am sure his departed Soul, witnessing this great love, must be rejoicing in heaven. Bravo! Mangalore Konkans!

It is a great gesture and definetely one that fits to our dear Wilfy Rebimbus. Mean time we may also remember the family of Wilfyab who have lost their bread winner. He was rich in heart but not financially. A good amount of Wilfyab's little savings are spent for his treatment. Some help to Meena Bai will be go a long way as a tribute to Wilfy.

"Music is the soul of Wilfy'b" Tthe music maestro lived for music and enlightened lakhs of souls in his rich konkany songs.
A great tribute and important move by MK's. Still, I feel that other than awarding, if your organisation or any such organisations
may help and support financially to the talented young musicians who wants to expose their talents in the field of konkany music.
Because many talents stay in lime light only because in lack of finance.
So, it will be better to help those budding artistes in their early stages rather than awarding after achieving something.

I think this is the rich and true tribute to the legend. Instead of organising functions, giving big speeches, and getting media milage, we need real tribute to the legend like one Mangalore Konkans initiated. Hope more organisations will follow the footstep of pioneer organisation Mangalore Konkans. Hats-up to the management.
