New Delhi, Aug 18 (IANS): A 20-year-old woman has been arrested on the charge of mowing down a cyclist with her car in the Hauz Khas area of south Delhi and speeding away from the spot, a Delhi Police officer said on Tuesday.

The accused had hit cyclist Farooq Ahmed on August Kranti Marg near the Jija Bai Polytechnic on August 14.

Police said the young woman is a student and a resident of Delhi.

"On the basis of CCTV footage, her car, a Honda Amaze, was identified and seized. The accused was also traced and arrested," said south Delhi DCP Atul Thakur.

After the accident, Ahmed was admitted to AIIMS Trauma Centre but he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday evening. His relatives had later gathered at the Hauz Khas police station to demand the arrest of the accused driver.

A case under Sections 279 and 337 IPC was registered at Hauz Khas police station, to which Section 304 was later added after the victim's death.

The police had earlier said it had scrutinised CCTV footage and got vital clues about the vehicle that sped away after hitting the victim, leaving him in a pool of blood.
