Interfaith marriage in UP runs into controversy

Kanpur, Aug 24 (IANS): An interfaith marriage in Kanpur has kicked up a huge row with fringe religios outfit calling it a case of 'love jihad' even though the bride claims to have converted of her own will and married the groom from a different faith.

The local Bajrang Dal unit has been unwilling to accept the fact that Shalini is an adult and free to make her choices. Bajrang Dal workers, on Sunday night, created a ruckus outside the Kidwai Nagar and even got into an altercation with the police.

Shalini Yadav, 21, a resident of Barra in Kanpur, had recorded a video after marrying her lover who belongs to another religion, and posted it on Facebook last week. In the video, she is seen asking for protection as she faced a threat from her family.

Shalini, in the video also claimed that she had changed her name from Shalini to Fiza Fatima and married Mohd Faisal in court of her own will on July 2 in Ghaziabad. She said that her family had lodged a fake FIR against her husband, accusing him of kidnapping her although she had left her home of her own will on June 29.

Shalini's family had lodged the FIR against Mohd Faisal at the Kidwai Nagar police station.

The Bajrang Dal workers alleged that this was a case of 'love jihad', and Mohd Faizal should be arrested at the earliest.

Dilip Singh Bajrangi, the district convenor of the Bajrang Dal, said, "This is a case of love jihad. The man has lured away the girl and brainwashed her. We will not rest till the police takes action in this matter."

The district and police officials, however, were tight lipped on the issue and a police spokesman said that the matter was under investigation.

Parents should change their thinking. If children like each other and are happy with the decision Parents should support accept it. Don't worry about what the community thinks. It's your responsibility to support your child. If he has made a mistake, he will learn from it. Others you will lose your child. Unemployed.
Bajrang Dal, only good at stirring the pot.

It looks like people are agitating merely out of frustration. It is their personal life and nobody, not even the parents, have any right to interfere. Leave them alone so that they may lead a peaceful life.

Wish the couple a happy married life. It is very very painful for the parents of the girl. Easy to comment but only parents know the feeling. BD is doing more harm to the girl than helping the girls parents.

Marrying the man of her choice may be allowed as per our system but it will destroy her family and put the parents under agony and stress. It is very sad that the mother and father groom their beloved children with all care love affection and facilities and when get adult they betray their parents who take all the risks and strive hard to make them all proper in life.

I don't understand why the parents have to be in agony if the girl like the guy & if the guy is responsible with good nature. All parents don't nurture the kid to be religious fanatic. They try to teach the kids to be responsible & be independent.

Now in this case Bajrang Dal should be banned. BD is unnecessarily interfering with private life and decisions of legally matured citizens and thier rights. In fact that girl is asking protection from BD. The couple should file a case against BD for life threats, defamation and mental torcher for Rs 100 crores. Yogi's own govt and its administration has given legal permission for this marriage.

Oh! sri-elder, marriage is for grown ups and they marry before at least two witnesses. Though it is sad to see grown ups marry the person of their choice against their parents' wish, no one can compel or stop them from marrying. Once the court has decided the option is to go back to the court.
The district and police officials were tight lipped on the issue and a police spokesman said that the matter was under investigation. Sorry, police have to make it clear that no fringe grown is a law to other people.
If, parents have problem, they need to protest against the judge/court and not threaten the couple. Elders should know this!
Let the young couple make mistake and suffer the consequenses rather then suffer due to the mistakes made by their parents.

Thats what.. old laws should be changed in the best interest of this country.
Make it as 4 witness. 2 from boys side. And 2 from girls side.
And make every marriage registered by this way..

You can stop these kinds of marriages by making compulsory parents or guardians from both sides as mandatory witnesses requirements during registration.. otherwise cancel the registration and nullify the marriage.. Desh bachavo!

    Sainik :
"Let the lovers live happily and produce dozens of kids. its none of your business."

Look, while our country is already brimming with overpopulation, people have self consciously limited their family to just two children and some intellectuals have limited to even just one. If you are blessing the couple a dozen, at-least five more couples in India should not have children. I am sure you will volunteer to be one of them. Which other four couple you will souce for ? May I know ?

    Sri,

UP is such a place where family of the girl/boy goes after the blood of a couple if they married against caste rules within one religion. What BD are doing, is nothing in comparison to what parents do to their own children. Therefore, first be liberal to let people marry from Hindu religion irrespective of caste barrier. Else, there is all possibility that the girls flee such rigid marital dictat.
