Bengaluru: Sahitya Academy president meets CM, DCM, urges for state recognition for Tulu

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (EP)

Mangaluru, Aug 24: Tulu Sahitya Academy president Dayanand Kattalsar, member Kanti Shetty and former member Purushotham Chendla earlier on Monday, visited minister of higher education and deputy chief minister Ashwath Narayan requesting and urging the state government to recognise Tulu language as an official language.

In January last year, demanding the inclusion of Tulu language in the eighth schedule of the Indian Constitution, Tulunada Rakshana Vedike and ' Kalavidara Ghataka' had also organised an agitation in front of Mangaluru DC office.

Back then, urging for the inclusion of the language, Yogesh Shetty Jeppu, founder of Tulunadu Rakshana Vedike had pointed out that the people of Tulunadu were becoming strangers in their own soil, that they were neglected by the government in all aspects and exploited in various ways.

Tulu language branched independently from its proto-Dravidian roots nearly 2,000 years ago. It is also the second-largest language in Karnataka.

Meanwhile, those in support of the movement for giving Tulu language the recognition have claimed that the political parties and elected representatives have not taken the issue seriously to promote the language at national level.
