Panaji, Sep 2 (IANS): A 35-year-old jewellery shop owner was stabbed to death during a robbery attempt at his store in South Goa's Margao town on Wednesday, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Swapnil Walke, who runs a jewellery shop in Margao, located 35 km from Panaji.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has assured "justice", even as the Opposition on Wednesday decried the worsening law and order situation in the state.
"Shocked by the tragic incident at the jewellery outlet in Margao today. I have spoken to DGP and SP South Goa, and asked them to investigate the incident and arrest the culprits at the earliest. We will ensure that stern action is taken and the guilty are brought to justice," Sawant tweeted on Wednesday soon after a First Information Report was filed against unknown persons.
A video of the fatal assault has surfaced on social media, in which Walke is seen trying to resist the robbery attempt, before he collapsed after suffering knife injuries.
The victim was admitted to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, police said.
"Completely devastated with the news of daylight stabbing of young businessman. Drastic collapse of law and order situation in Goa. I demand immediate action in nabbing the murderers. Appeal to all to please remain safe," Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat said.
