Pledge All Our Children Elementary Education - PM

New Delhi, April 1 (IANS) Right to Education as a fundamental right formally came into effect Thursday with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging all stakeholders to make it a success by empowering people through education.

"Today our government comes before you to pledge all our children elementary education. The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act enacted by parliament in August, 2009 comes into force today (Thursday)," the prime minister said in his early morning address to the nation delivered both in Hindi and English.

"The fundamental right to education as incorporated in our constitution through Article 21 (A) has also become operative from today.

"This demonstrates our national commitment to the education of our children and to the future of India. We are a nation of young people. Education will determine the well being of our nation. Education is the key to progress. It empowers the individuals. If we nurture our children through right to education then India's future is secured," he said.

The prime minister said: "We are committed that all children irrespective of gender and social category have access to education . Education enables them to acquire the skills, knowledge and attitude to become responsible citizens of India."

He urged all state governments to join hands to make this initiative a success and also appealed to teachers and parents to be partners in this endeavour.

A big step forward. I congratulate Kapil Sibal and his team for this. The high light of this enactment is that education for children will be free and compulsory. Parents cannot shun away from their responsibility of sending their children to schools. It is compulsory for both government and the parent, government to provide free education and the parent to send their children to school. Hope all the state governments co-operate with the central government.

This is one more positive step to attract our future generation towards education. Mid-day meal was in way an enticement for the poor to send the children to school. Those children who at times were starving at home, relished on one hot meal a day (served in the school). Thank you MMS for your very innovative programs. Now, a child can complain against those who are stopping her/him from going to school because, hereafter, elementary education is their birthright.
