Jaya Bachchan slams actors for comparing Bollywood to 'gutter', seeks govt support

New Delhi, Sep 15 (IANS): Amid a raging controversy over drug use in the film industry in connection with a probe into the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, Samajwadi Party MP and veteran actor Jaya Bachchan on Tuesday slammed all those who have been calling the Mumbai-based entertainment industry a "gutter".

"Sir I want to talk," Bachchan requested Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu as she stood up to seek government support for the industry.

Naidu stopped her and requested her to wear a mask. She responded that her voice will not be clear if she spoke while wearing the mask.

"My name is Jaya Bachchan," she said taking everyone by surprise, and Naidu too said that she being a well-known personality need not introduce herself.

"Sir thanks a lot. But the same industry is being tarnished," she said.

"Entertainment industry provides 5 lakh employment every day and indirectly provides livelihood to five million people.

"At a time when the situation is depressing and employment is at its worst level, in order to divert people's attention, we are being flogged by social media," she said, adding that all this was because the government was not coming out in support of the industry.

"The people who made their names in the industry have called it a gutter. I completely disagree. I really dissociate myself and I hope that the government tells these people who have made their earning and name and fame in the industry to stop using such language," she said, without naming anyone.

She said that there are people in the industry, who are the highest taxpayers and they are being harassed. "All kinds of promises are being made to the industry but never kept," she added.

"I think the government must stand by the entertainment industry as it always comes forward to help the government in whatever effort it makes. If there is a national calamity, they give their money and everything. The government must support it and not kill it," she said, adding, "Just because there are a few people (doing bad things), you cannot tarnish the image of the entire industry."

The veteran actor, who is married to Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, said the entertainment industry brings international name and recognition to the country.

Taking a swipe at actor and BJP MP from Gorakhpur Ravi Kishan, without taking his name, Jaya Bachchan said: "I was really embarrassed and ashamed as a Lok Sabha MP spoke against the industry."

"Jis thaali me khate hai, usi me ched karte hai," she said in Hindi in a dig at the actor, literally meaning destroying the goose that lays the golden egg.

Kangana Ranaut and several other actors have opened up over the use of drugs in Bollywood. Amid the drug controversy, Ranaut has compared Mumbai to POK (Pakistan occupied Kashmir). The BrihanMumbai Corporation has also razed Ranaut's office in Mumbai over illegal construction leading to a fresh war of words between the state government and the actor.

People should not think about Bollywood, they have made enough fortunes by making the public fool by making a film & making it again & again by subtitle 1,2,3 etc...
Bollywood is illegal den of all types of illegal activities.
How come she never talk about so many mysterious deaths in the Industry?
Don't worry public has made up their mind to clean up the Bollywood.
Never ever make any of them as your Hero's or role models.

I would have preferred if the person clearly stated if any actors she knows personally are totally drugs-free.

She said "Just because there are a few people (doing bad things), you cannot tarnish the image of the entire industry." Fair enough.

But the real question is: is there a single actor in Bollywood who will put the hand up and assertively state that he/she is totally drugs-free?

No. Acting in the movies and drugs have ALWAYS gone hand-in-hand. Not just in India.

When ppl call democratically elected PM with different abuse you ppl say "freedom of expression."? But is that FOE is only for few and selective?
Why she did not speak about the destruction of Kangana Office during Covid19 and Govt has banned taking any demolition activity?
Simple logic is that tryi g to divert the "drug" issue

Madam Jaya Bachchan, if Abhishek Bachchan was at Sushant Singh Rajput's place, would you have still said what you are saying ? Be a human first madam, not a RS Member representing Cinema industry. It might be that your grandchildren's name crops up out of nowhere in drug related news. Please be patient, don't waste your pearls of wisdom.

First Jaya should answer how her son Abhishek Bachhan is surviving in the industry for 2 and half decades.? He is around since 1996 with 64 , I repeat 'sixty four' movies and not even a solo hit? Will anyone have that many chances? Nepotism has damaged the quality of films and the industry. Its better to boycott this xhit. Whoever has called it 'gutter' has done the right job. We have spent enough of hard earned money to may these jokers as 'stars'.

I definitely agree with you. The actor Sushanth who died had 6 hits out of 9 but he was ignored as he was an outsider. In addition to Abhishek,, we have Uday Chopra 30 movies all flops, except for Dhoom where the movie is carried by someone else. Arjun Kapur 15 movies 15 flops, still has got lots of work. Tushar Kapoor 40 movies. no solo hits. Sorry , even Shahid kapoor first 15 consecutive flops , still struggling and a 'star' without any solo hit. Its high time we teach bollywood a lesson.

Sonam kapoor gave 14 flops consecutively. But was in the limelight for various other reasons. Eventually her dad fixed an 'award' for her 'acting' in Nirjara. Sonam in a TV show had stated that 'SSR was not hot' but later she married a bald headed and pot bellied man only for his moolah.

Say No to Bollywood,it's high time to boycott these selfish actors. Don't follow them as a icon or role model, our real Hero's should be our soldiers, Doctors, Scientists, nurses or anyone who set good example in society to keep the humanity alive.
