Former PM, JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda takes oath as Rajya Sabha member

New Delhi, Sep 20 (IANS): Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda took oath as a Rajya Sabha member on Sunday.

The Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) supremo took oath in Kannada in the presence of Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu shortly after the House convened for the day.

Gowda, 87, was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka with the support of the opposition Congress on June 12 in the biennial elections held in Bengaluru for four seats that fell vacant after the previous members' terms ended on June 25.

Though 45 of the 61 new members took oath on July 22 in Parliament House, Gowda could not go to New Delhi then, as he was unwell and due to coronavirus-induced restrictions on travelling for senior citizens amid the pandemic.

Gowda has entered the Rajya Sabha for the second time, 24 years after he was elected when he was the Prime Minister from June 1996 to April 1997.

Meanwhile, former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, Congress leader Ambika Soni and Samajwadi Party's Revati Raman Singh has sought leave from Sunday's session.

Citing health issues, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram also sought leave.

    When we have brilliant well studied youngsters to be the dynamic leaders why there's a need for so elderly have to take the responsibility of getting elected as Rajya Sabha members. Of course the elders should be respected and they should be consulted for better decisions. There should be an age limit like in public sectors employees can't continue to work after the age of 60yrs.

    Who wants well studied people. Indian public will elect the representatives on the basis of religion,cast or creed. If good people comes to politics his life will made hell by corrupt politicians or he will be killed.

    Who told you that our politicians are not educated. Our PM is graduate and I heard our smriti Iranian got graduation certificate from America. I don't know whether it's real or fake. Most of our politicians are graduates , fake or real , I don't know.

    Sad news for the grand old party. It was very obvious . I was always saying. A Congress fight back in the state is a boon to JDS. At the end the only beneficiaries are HDD and family. Anyways my good luck to the tall leader Dodda Gowdru Sir in his new role.

    Dodda Gowdru and his whole family had retired from politics and sleeping with their party and careers literally finished. However a lease of life was given to them by Congress in 2018 post elections . HDK was made the CM by the Congress to keep the political career of RaGa alive .HDK knew that it would be just a matter of time, before the coalition crumbled. He took full advantage of that brief period by launching his brother, father, wife and son in politics . Another son was launched as movie star. The family and party made hay when the sun shined. Despite being ousted, today HDK is more preferred than Siddu as CM. There is no use blaming Dodda Gowdru , HDK , Revanna or even JDS for that matter today, its all Congress doing.

    87 years old, hardly can walk without support, still hungry & thirsty for power. What can people expect from this old fellow.
    Sad state of Indian politics, time to pass a bill to have age limit, qualification and clean (criminal ) record to enter Indian Parliament and legislative assembly.
