Kasargod, Sep 21: The rain and strong wind have wreaked havoc with normal life of the people of the district. Rivers are overflowing due to excessive rainfall and low lying areas have been flooded. A number of families have been shifted to safer places.

The district is experiencing incessant rainfall from Friday night. Losses inflicted by rain on agriculture runs into several lacs of rupees. Madhuvahini rivulet is overflowing, as a result of which knee-deep water is standing in the premises of the historically famous Sri Madanantheshwara Siddhivinayaka temple at Madur. Not only the temple, but the entire Madhur area has been flooded and the open ground around the temple has inundated in water and water is gushing through the roads.

Because of floods, three families from Madhur Patla have been shifted to houses of their close ones. Twelve families from Balal and a family from Malom were shifted to safer places. At Bangra Manjeshwar rivulet overflowed, and agricultural crops over 75 acres of land was damaged. A large number of coconut, areca nut and banana trees were uprooted. As a tree fell on the national highway at Manjeshwar, vehicular traffic was thrown out of gear for several hours.

The meteorological department has predicted heavy rainfall in the district till September 23. Orange alert has been sounded in the district for Tuesday September 22.
