Udupi, Sep 22: The aftermath of rain that wreaked havoc in Udupi is being inspected. The lives of the people turned miserable as many lost their homes. The rains left behind dilapidated houses, stranded vehicles, caused the loss of property, leaving lasting mental agony in the minds of the flood victims. As per the district administration, the cumulative amount of loss calculated is stated to be Rs 95,17,000. The amount also includes the value of crops lost.

The floods that drowned the district on September 20 is believed to be one of the most disastrous torrents that the district witnessed in the past four decades. The entire city had inundated in water including the mainland, as per data the people residing in Bailakere, Perampalli, and Doddangudde faced the most damaging impact.

The torrential rains led to the flooding of houses, shops and business establishments. Even in the Kalsanka area the rainwater entered into several shops. The wholesale grocery shops in the area were completely damaged causing a huge amount of food grains to wash away.

Udupi MLA Raghupathi Bhat visited the shops and assured the victims to provide the maximum compensation. He distributed Rs 2,85,300 as compensation to three families and ensured monetary help from the government to the families that suffered.

An overview of the reported loss caused by the floods is believed to be around Rs 100 crore. However, an accurate calculation is yet to be done. Meanwhile, the district administration is gearing up to also contain the pandemic which could spread due to the calamity.

More than 104 houses were destroyed in the deluge and water is said to have entered more than 1,000 houses. Udupi received 111 mm of rains on September 20.

The district administration had also set up seven relief centres to provide aid to the victims. Several two-wheelers and four-wheelers were damaged following the havoc brought on by the floods.
