Bengaluru, Sep 29: There was expectation in the air about the establishment of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) office in the city, in view of the fact that a large number of terrorists have made this city their base. Through an order issued by the union home ministry on Monday September 28, new NIA offices will be opened only in Ranchi, Chennai, and Imphal.

There has been a persistent demand for opening of an NIA office here in order to crush the terrorist activities in the city and to speed up the investigation into a large number of causes of terrorism pending here. The city (south) MP Tejasvi Surya, too had recently met union home minister Amit Shah, and urged him to open a permanent NIA office here in place of the camp office. Tejasvi had claimed that Amit Shah had promised to uphold his request. Therefore, the expectation about a new NIA office here had got deep-rooted.

The press statement issued by the central home ministry on Monday does not have the name of the city. As such, the city may have to wait for some more time before getting NIA office. At present, only one deputy superintendent of police grade officer and a few staff are involved with terrorist-related investigation in the city. They have not been provided with a proper office and other facilities. Many officers have felt that the NIA needs to be strengthened by opening full-fledged office in Bengaluru as there is a need to decimate terrorist activities.
