Mangaluru: Fishing season begins late - Fishermen get mixed result

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Sep 29: Fishing season began this time with the inordinate delay due to adverse circumstances. The fishermen are a bit relieved as they could catch red prawns, pomfrets etc in good quantities. But in Udupi, catches of fishes which command a ">good price in the market are not that good.

During the last year, fishing could be undertaken for only a very short period because of cyclonic storms and inclement weather. Lockdown announced on March 25, fishing holiday in June and July and hostile weather in August had robbed the livelihood of the fishermen.

During the last two days, the fishermen from here were able to get good catches of red prawns, black prawns, pomfret and some other variety. Some boats which left the shore came back with about 1,000 tonnes of red prawns. It is said that in Udupi, a fish variety known as Klathi, was caught in abundance but at some places, space constraints were faced to store the fish. This variety of fish can be exported but in the local market, it has less demand.

Some high-value fishes like squid, ribbonfish and others have been rare in Udupi. In Mangaluru also their catch was less.

About 70 per cent of migrant workers from other states have returned. Once they come back in full strength, fishing might revert to its original form, feels deputy director of fisheries, Parshwanath. Fishermen leader Divakar Ullal expressed happiness at getting good catches.

Everybody wants to do the best in their trade. Last year basic rate of fish was Rs.100/- but this year nobody starts a conversation without Rs.200/- Everything is going up but our income has halved or in some cases none at all since one/two members in a family lost their job.

    How is survival possible ?

May be it's good to ban fish eating too, like beef eating is banned. Poor people will turn vegetarians which can be grown in their own yard for consumption.

(Now see the opposition from fish-catching/selling people. They want their bread but don't care about the industry that also gives employment/income to several people, a cheaper protein who cannot afford other meats).

    Shreyas Kamath,

Not surprising that you have a target of making RG a PM. Your first generation was aimed at making SG a PM. One minister in the opposition vowed to do everything she would, that she had to, if she unfortunately becomes a widow. Sad that she did not live upto becoming a widow, nor to see the days of RG becoming a PM because she nothing left to do, she told everything (to be doing) in the previous instance.

Rub yourself with salt people, neither SG nor RG had a target of becoming a PM as much as the 'Three times CM' had. Look at the condition of India now. Look at the economy, employment, commodity prices - rub salt - and celebrate to the level you have pulled down our nation.

It's not only Congress or other party supporters suffering - you guys too are paying same amount. Mr. Modi is not slyly transferring subsidy to your account, bills passed apply to you guys too. Now, think of the 'Achche Din' of times before 2014 and regurgitate.
