Mangaluru: Employees, associations stage protest against privatisation of electricity companies

Mangaluru, Oct 5: District Federation of Karnataka Electricity Board Employees Union and associations, staged a protest here at MESCOM office at Bejai on Monday October 5, against the central government over the decision of privatising electricity companies.

The officials and employees of MESCOM office wore black bands showing solidarity to the protest.

Manjappa, senior vice president, engineers’ association said, "We condemn the decision of privatising electricity companies. On July 3, 2020, in a meeting conducted which included all states power ministers over amending Electricity Act, 11 states and two union territories opposed the move. Despite opposition, the central government has taken call in its favour regarding this.

"On September 22 the procedure was undertaken by the union power ministry to privatise electricity companies and standard bidding documents were released. Privatisation would affect the farmers and BPL card holders. Electricity provided at concessional rate to the industries may stop. We are aware about the situation that occurred in Mumbai and Delhi due to privatisation of electricity companies. Even the provision of subsidy in electricity may stop due to this move," said Manjappa.

Later, the officials and employees of MESCOM gave memorandum to the managing director of MESCOM Prashanth Kumar Mishra.

    The capability of a country providing public utilities can be gauged by its holding in such departments. The moment the government decides to let a private player to take the reins of such public services, the country is doomed. One has to understand that such public services exist in the interests of the citizens who deserve the minimum. When the government handles such sectors the costs of such services are always subsidized in the interest of the citizens. When it lands in the hands of private players, there is an element of added value which the private player reserves in its interests and that's when the real problem begins. The government and the private player have both vested interests and it is not that the government cannot handle such sectors. Private players do not even have a soft corner if payments for such services are delayed by the citizens and act adversely against them.
    If the government continues to let such core public services to be privatized the citizens of India are doomed. Not to forget what has happened to BSNL!
    Another matter that Mangaloreans need to concentrate on is whether Mangalore city being nominated to be a smart city is a boon or bane . As the way the smart city developments are functioning in the district, citizens will have to pay taxes through their nose for all those funds that being proliferated in the name of development!

    We have private Telephone companies, airlines, hospitals, univerisities and moreover we had family owned government for 70 years. So why so hue and cry now?
    Privatization of utility sector is the need of hour to eliminate corruption from the root.

    MESCOM is the most unprofessional company handling distribution of
    electrical power generated by Adani company.

    MESCOM cuts power supply to homes and entire areas at their own will
    sometimes 30 times a day - without any prior notice to the homes or the
    area. Especially at nights, MESCOM shuts off power supply on the main
    roads, bi-lanes, and in homes, thereby disrupting people's lives, at their
    will.

    Morever, electrical machines and appliances get out of order because of
    MESCOM's erratic ways of shutting off power supply sometimes for a
    minute, sometimes for 5 minutes, sometimes for 10min, sometimes for
    12 hours too.

    Two homes suffered a loss of Rs.3000.- each to get their Washing machine electronic board replaced, that got short due to power being shut off and on whilst the machine was functioning.. MESCOM does not hold it self responsible nor does it compensates.

    First of all the power tariff for houses in Mangalore has increased by 500% since 4 years. Now they are talking privatization. Even middle class family are bearing the brunt of the hike. Hence forth many families will go back to the Kerosne age (Chimney) will be seen all over Mangalore after 3 decades of interval. Cooking gas rates also increased by 400% before it was Rupees 190 to 225 now it has fixed to Rs 594. The income of a daily earner is less than Rupees 200 per day. Everywhere hike, but salary is too less with most of middle class families. For cash grabbers, business extortionists and corrupted people hike don't matter and they even don't bother to object policies.

    After Mangaluru airport, New Mangalore sea port, piped gas line , Thermal plant at Padubidri , Now Mescom will fall into adaani . Monopoly of all infrastructure of DK district. 2G helping fellow G. Intelligent people of DK ,Udupi wake up one day you have to pay heavily for this monopoly. Local representatives will run to Bengaluru just like two ex-cm of districts.

    Few years back I went to pay bill carrying 2 children one year and 2 years at 3.30. Clerk denied to take bill. she told already counter closed. I requested JEO to take the bill. He supported the clerk and told me come tomorrow. Carrying children in the rush city bus crying I returned and next day carrying my children I went again to pay electricity bill. I saw that clerk in my bus in the front seat sitting and travelling.

    In private concerns if there is less salary people will work hard. In Govt this is the case.

    So Private will be better for us. If Mescom people does not want to work in private concern let them search Govt job.

    Are there any competitors for MESCOM? Privatization only works for the consumer if there is competition.

    A monopoly in the hands of private players will only lead to increase in prices. After all if you dont like their service you have to either change city or live in darkness.

    Torrent power earlier known as Ahmadabad Electricity Company is a private company that provides electricity to city of Ahmedabad for last 70 years, power outage in last 50 years was only 5 times, there is no voltage fluctuation the price is less than Mescom, then why protest? Incidentally the top most 2 people in AECo were from Mangalore.When Mangaloeans can do such a good job outside why not in their hometown

    If whole of India is privatised including defence then why BJP govt in the centre needs all the ministries, ministers, activists and blind Bhakths. Only two people Modi and Shah will be ruling the country eventually as kings shutting down the Parliament House.

    Apparently the fleeing of Rahul Khan from Amethi to Wayand the subsequent 2019 rout of the Vadra Congress has hit hard on some Ghulams. Dragging BJP and Bakhts for everything. All I can advise to them is to come on the streets and show solidarity. Being online tigers has it limitations, even minorities are fed up with this as what happened in CAA protests.
