Bengaluru, Oct 7: With 106 murders reported in 2019 Bengaluru has topped the charts for having reported the highest revenge murders in India, followed by national capital Delhi, which reported 87, as per the 2019 data by National Crimes Records Bureau (NCRB).

On the other hand, Delhi topped the murder chart with 505 killings, while the overall murders that were reported from Bengaluru in 2019 are 210.

According to a report in Times of India, around 75 per cent of the murders were committed due to personal enmity or vendetta and were pre-planned and the killers were known to their victims.

Most of the murders over personal enmity took place for land, woman and wealth. "The murders over personal enmity take place in families, between friends and people living in the same locality. The probe into these murders is not difficult compared to murders for gains. Once the motive for the crime is established tracing and arresting the suspect becomes easy," the report quoted former DGP DV Guruprasad as saying.

Another state in south India was Chennai which topped the list of murders committed due to ‘illicit relationships’

As per the data by NCB, it revealed that a woman is subjected to cruelty at the hands of her in-laws or husband every four minutes. NCRB's report also revealed that rape in the country happens every 16 minutes.

Meanwhile, a senior police officer stated that the murders which are committed for personal gains are more worrisome. "The murders for enmity are mostly for personal reasons. However, in murders for gain, the motive for the crime is to acquire gold, money and other valuables. Recently, a 25-year-old woman was murdered and her throat was slit in Hebbagodu. The murderer went away with her mobile phone and gold chain. A murder for gain is where a person is killed for monetary benefits. Such cases pose a challenge to the police," said the police officer.
