Kasargod, Oct 9: A youth from Hosangady in the district who accompanied a jeweller from Uppala to a private finance firm reportedly for releasing the jewellery pledged by him, decamped with Rs 12 lac in cash belonging to the jeweller.

In a complaint filed by him with the police, the jeweller said that the youth in question had contacted him and told him that he had pledged jewellery items worth Rs 12 lac in a private finance firm at Uduma. He made an offer to sell this gold to the jeweller if he arranged money for getting the gold loan cleared and get jewellery released from the finance firm. It is said that the jeweller agreed to the proposal and handed over Rs 12 lac in the form of an advance.

The youth then reached the finance firm at Uduma accompanied by the jeweller. He said that at a time, only one is allowed inside. He convinced the jeweller that he would enter the firm first and get the loan cleared. He returned a little later and told the jeweller that he had got the jewellery released and that the jeweller can collect the same from the finance firm manager. He then boarded a car and escaped, it is said.

When the jeweller contacted the finance firm manager, he came to know that the youth had pledged gold ornaments worth Rs 5 lac there. The jeweller has since filed a complaint in Bekal police station, and a probe has been launched.
