Bengaluru, Oct 9: Stricter measures are expected within a week by the Karnataka government with regard to chewing of tobacco products including gutka.
A meeting was held in July by the governor Vajubhai Vala along with chief minister B S Yediyurappa and home minister Basavaraj Bommai and discussed the possibility of ban on the sale and distribution of chewing tobacco products.
On Thursday two officials met the governor - additional chief secretary to the chief minister E V Ramana Reddy and additional chief secretary of health and family welfare department Jawaid Akhtar.
A press release was issued from the Raj Bhawan that stated that a progressive report will be submitted to the chief minister by the two officials on banning gutka as well as scented and non-scented chewing tobacco.
The officials said that an ordinance on the matter would be issued within a week.
