Mysore: Fr Joseph Saldanha of St Jude’s Church Killed in Accident

Mysore, Apr 21: Fr Joseph Saldanha (56), parish priest of St Jude’s Church, B M Shree Nagar (Metagalli), here succumbed to injuries sustained in an accident that occurred at around 6.30 am on Wednesday April 21. The tragedy took place near the GRS Fantasy Park on the Ring Road, when Fr Saldanha, who was on his morning walk, was hit by a car.

He suffered multiple head injuries and breathed his last on the spot. His body was later taken to JSS Medical College for postmortem.

Driver of the car, Mahesh, has been arrested, and the car has been confiscated.

Fr Saldanha was a native of Kedamullur village near Virajpet in Kodagu district. He was posted to Metagalli church two years ago. Church sources said that preparations were on to celebrate the completion of his 25 years of priesthood on May 14, 2010.

The priest’s mortal remains would be brought to St Joseph’s Cathedral (St Philomena’s Church) on Thursday April 22 at 1 pm. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 pm, and he will be laid to rest at the Catholic Cemetery, Gandhinagar in the city, a press release issued by Fr K A William, parish priest of Sr Joseph’s Cathedral, said.

    So sorry to here that Fr. Joseph is no more. How can a priest going for a walk can meet with such big accident? I hope it is not a deliberate accident. We pray that his soul rest in peace. It's a big loss for the church! May God's mercy be upon the whole human kind specially for clergies.

    Of late, I am hearing and reading about the death of christian priest in road and other accidents, which is very sad and very very unfortunate. The instensity of such accidents have increased, which gives out specualte that are such accidents not stage managed by some anti social elements and anti christian lobby. This is my personal thought and I may be wrong too.
