Mangalore, Apr 24: The city police are on the look-out for a motorbike rider, who is proving to be a public nuisance.
He, along with his cronies, drives his vehicle noisily through the city streets in the middle of the night and shouts at the top of his voice.
The police were alerted to the matter after deputy commissioner (DC) V Ponnuraj brought this to their notice after experiencing the disturbance firsthand.
The biker drives on empty roads at unearthly hours as if he were a participant in some kind of bike rally and also turns tricks with his vehicle. For instance, he sometimes rides the bike balanced on just one wheel, at high speeds, and at times three people are seen riding the bike.
The police are searching for the mystery rider and his accomplices for causing noise pollution and disturbing the people.
Police said that the sound of his altered bike and shouting by his gang members is very disturbing to the public.
The DC, in a meeting, said that he experienced the disturbance when he was sleeping at his official residence near Balmatta in the city. “The sound of the bike and horrible shouting voices disturbed me”, he said.
After the incident came to the DC’s notice the police have been searching for the miscreants all round the clock. But this seems to have tipped off the hooligan as well for there have been no further reports of disturbances since.
A shopkeeper in Balmatta area said that this had been happening for many months in the middle of the night. He said that the miscreants were the least bothered and took the bike riding as a challenge sparing no thought for other vehicles on the road or pedestrians.
Recently, the police found a bike making a similar noise and followed it but could not apprehend the driver.
They located a bike under repair at a workshop and took it to the police station. The workshop owner said that the bike had been under repair for one month and it was not in running condition.
“Due to the police officers’ demand we shifted it to the station using another vehicle”, he added. This is an instance of an innocent falling victim to another’s offence.
The police search for the crazy bike rider continues and hopefully his capture is imminent. This might finally help some residents in Balmatta area get their night’s sound sleep back.
