Guj bypolls: Cong complains against BJP for MCC violations

Gandhinagar, Nov 3 (IANS): Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Amit Chavda has alleged that contrary to the police and administration behaving in an unbiased manner to conduct free and fair elections in the by-polls, they have been acting as BJP's agents in the by-elections held for 8th State Assembly constituencies on Tuesday.

The Congress has filed a couple of complaints alleging that the administration sided with the BJP and for violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) to Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Gujarat Dr S. Muralikrishna.

Addressing the media, Chavda said, "In the beginning, the BJP by bribing our legislators and spending crores of rupees, necessitated the by-elections in the state. And now after realising their defeat in the polls, the BJP was seen trying to force, threaten, coax and bribe the voters."

"Mohanbhai Kundariya, the BJP MP from Rajkot was luring voters to vote for BJP by offering the Koli community a marriage and community hall building. He offered to give the community more money from the MP grant," added Chavda.

"The BJP has not only been violating the MCC, but also interfering in the judicial process and assuring the voters of influencing the judiciary and freeing them from legal entanglements. In Karjan constituency, the BJP was trying to bribe the voters by handing out cash. In Morbi, members of BJP ware distributing party's pamphlets inside the polling booth," added Chavda.

"Not only that, the wife of Gujarat CM Anjali Rupani was campaigning in Morbi and violating the MCC. The administration and the police too were acting on BJP's behalf. But despite all that, the people of Gujarat came out in large numbers to vote against injustice and defectors. The people will teach the BJP a lesson. Looking at Tuesday's trends we are confident of winning all the 8 seats," added Chavda.
