'Who is Bimal Gurung', asks GJM president Binoy Tamang after meeting with Mamata

Kolkata, Nov 3 (IANS): The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) faction, backed by Binoy Tamang and Anit Thapa, took out a grand rally in Darjeeling on Tuesday against Bimal Gurung at a time when the duo came to Kolkata to meet West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee reviewing the law and order situation in the Hills.

GJM president Binay Tamang and general secretary and Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) chairman Anit Thapa met Banerjee at the state secretariat Nabanna here.

"Who is Bimal Gurung? He is a closed chapter in Darjeeling. It is not in our syllabus even," Binoy Tamang told reporters when asked if anything was discussed about Gurung during the meeting with the West Bengal CM.

Tamang said that former GJM president Bimal Gurung, general secretary Roshan Giri and their groups have no existence in Darjeeling now. "It is a bygone chapter now," he said.

After Bimal Gurung suddenly resurfaced in public on October 21 just before the Durga Puja festival, multiple rallies were being held against him in the hills. While addressing the media before leaving for Kolkata on Monday, Binay Tamang said that Gurung is not a threat to him but instead, the matter is just the other way round.

Tamang said that Gurung's return to the Darjeeling Hills will not affect his political career.

Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha MP Sougata Roy said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has no existence in the hills. "Bimal Gurung was on the run for three years. He has shown faith in chief minister Mamata Banerjee and resurfaced. He also publicly said that he would support the Trinamool Congress in the 2021 Assembly elections," Roy said.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar is also in Darjeeling for a month. He is likely to conduct multiple talks and discussions till November 30. However, no representatives from the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) have been called so far to attend the meetings.
