Mangaluru, Nov 4: Mangaluru Mahanagara Paura Samithi has said that workers of none of the political parties can become members of the ward committees in the city. The ward committees will be chaired by the corporators of the respective wards and they have ten members each. There is a provision to choose members by unanimous selection or election, it has said.
General secretary of the committee, B S Chandru, addressing a press meet in the city on Tuesday November 3, said that if it is found that any of the 60 ward committees have party activists, the Samithi will carry out fight to disqualify them from the memberships.
He said that it has been 23 years since the government ordered formation of ward committees. He welcomed the city corporation's initiative to form ward committees in the city. Leader of the committee, M G Hegde, requested the people to extend support for the concept of a beautiful city by supporting the formation of ward committees in all the 60 wards.
He said that the legal fight carried out over the last several years for the constitution of these committees has borne fruit now. "It is possible to achieve all-round progress of wards by choosing noble individuals to the committees. No works can be executed in the wards without the permission of the committees. It is possible for form ward committees that can be models for the entire country," he said.
President of the committee, S P Changappa, office bearers Padmanabha Ullal, Stany Alvares, Mohan Pachanady and Shivappa were present.
