Republic TV editor's arrest 'misuse of state power': Amit Shah

New Delhi, Nov 4 (IANS): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday hit out at the Congress and its allies in Maharashtra for "misuse of state power" against Republic TV and its editor Arnab Goswami.

The Home Minister's remarks came after Goswami's arrest by the Maharashtra Police.

"Congress and its allies have shamed democracy once again. Blatant misuse of state power against Republic TV and Arnab Goswami is an attack on individual freedom and the 4th pillar of democracy," Shah tweeted.

The Minister further said it reminds us of "the emergency". "This attack on free press must be and will be opposed."

The Maharashtra Police's Raigad unit on Wednesday morning raided the residence of the Republic TV owner and arrested its Chief Editor Arnab Goswami in an abetment to suicide case.

A senior police officer Sachin Vaze said that Goswami was arrested in the abetment to suicide case of 2018, which had been closed earlier and has now been reopened.

A police team swooped down on the Republic TV's chief and picked him up from his home even as his family protested while his colleagues started rushing to the spot for live coverage.

The channel strongly slammed the move for "parading the editor of a top Indian news channel like a criminal, pulled by the hair, threatened, not allowed to drink water", after 20-30 policemen barged in and arrested Goswami.

What an irony- India's Home minister supporting a abetement to suicide accused criminal. Here in this arrest no where to see any connection of free speach and freedom of expression. Maharastra police arrested one criminal not an journalist and hence Home minister must support this action of police.

Free Press' should be freely publishing about all parties not all parties except one party which is safe guarded and defended throughput and harassing and silencing whoever speaks truth about that one party is not FreePress.

It's possible to reopen the hushed up case. Hushed up, controversial and delayed cases are justice denied.

look, who is talking! as if it was not gross abuse of state power imprisoning the leaders in Kashmir and in the anti-CAA protests on grounds of sedition and other flimsy arguments. also the gross abuse f power by using ED, CBI, NIA etc. agencies to harass and humiliate, without a shred of evidence, senior opposition leaders like P Chidambaram and our own DKS. It hurts now that one of your own chamchas has been hit, Amit Shah!

Oh, really ?? How do you explain the high drama about arresting PC for abatement to his son's wrongdoing ?? The police climbed the walls, reached the terrace ?? He was well within the legal parameters by applying for bail, etc. He himself being a legal professional, how much drama you did ?? Do you want the public to believe that you did not help your son in gaining so much of wealth ??

Goswamy is nothing. You wait for your turn. All days are not always rosy.
