Bengaluru: Excise department allows sale of beer past expiry date

Bengaluru, Nov 7: In a controversial move, the excise department has ordered sale of beer that have passed the expiry date, and which remained unsold in the depots of Karnataka State Beverages Corporation Ltd because of the coronavirus-related lockdown.

In the interests of augmenting the revenue of the government, the department had earlier permitted to sell beer bottles which had been bottled between December 15, 2019 and March 31, 2020 which remained unsold in different depots of the corporation.

Now, taking into consideration requests received from breweries, the commissioner in the department, Lokesh, has permitted to sell beer that has crossed the expiry date till December 31.

    Beer Lovers - simply ensure not to purchase Beer Cans or Bottles
    that have a expired date - you cannot win with the Excise Dept. or
    this CM or PM.

    If you believe something is not right, just go the other way. You will
    be peace and ease. It is not like Demonitisation, which was surely not a
    necessity but all were forced into all the inconvenience and the
    change in currency and denomination. It did not benefit nor did one
    have a choice here.

    Bro,
    I don't know about beer cans/bottles, but I have seen videos of expired soap packets & how they erase the original expiry date with chemicals & then print new dates & push them to the gullible public!!

    Such a declaration given by the administration is a "catastrophe"!!

    Can't understand who the hell is this Excise dept to over rule FDA norms. If their revenue is reduced, let them jump into a pond of such beer instead of allowing general public to drink poison.

    This irresponsible statement clearly violates FDA & FSSAI guidelines set by the government!
    This is just to please the beer lobby for "obvious reasons"!

    Logic says that if it's applicable to beer then why not for all other food items??
    Such a statement in an advanced country would have put the decision makers in serious legal trouble!

    This is worst than treating humans like animals!

    This is a gamble to clear old bottles.....the buyer may not check the manufacturing date.....tomorrow if the buyer complains...the seller is safe as the dept has provided permission....by the way who will go to consumer court for couple of beer bottles....jugaad at its best😌

    Absurd decision. There is a reason why Beer has a “ use by “ date.... the excise department is no authority to decide on what will have an adverse impact on the health of the consumers. Hope discerning consumers will check the EXPIRY date and refrain from purchasing , alternatively the liquor shops should not lift such stocks from the MSIL depots. The present Government has no clue on what it’s doing, Citizens bear the brunt of foolish decisions... no doubt we are fools to elect fools to govern us.

    Because of poor storage conditions, if the quality has deteriorated to an extent that if the consumer falls ill, will Government provide compensation as directed by the courts?
    What are the terms and conditions of this greed?
    Why can't Government simply reimburse the tax collected from the manufacturers at loss due to pandemic and avoid future potential litigation?
    Interesting to see the related circular.

    Senseless decision!

    Who on earth will pay money & buy expired beer unless they try to erase the evidence of DOM!
    Beer loses its fizz, becomes flat, & is not palatable after a certain period!
