Bantwal, May 9: Rani Abbakka, the legendary queen of Ullal, here had largely contributed for the communal harmony in the Dakshina Kannada district to thrive, said eminent litterateur Sara Abubaker.


 
Sara Abubacker was speaking after inaugurating a seminar on ‘Beary – Tuluva thriving life and cultural relations,’ which was held under the aegis of Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy and Rani Abbakka Tulu Study Centre at Sanchayagiri, B C Road, here on Saturday May 8.
 
“The relations between Beary and Hindu communities were disturbed as the Portuguese set their feet at the periphery of Rani Abbakka’s kingdom,” said Sara.  Despite of this, the love and trust among the different community in the society is exemplary, she added.
 
Professor Tukaram Poojary, president of Rani Abbakka Tulu Study Centre in his presidential address, said that the relations between different communities thrived in the past.  Meanwhile, he urged the society to be reminded of sensitivity and harmonious living of past, to foster peace and harmony as the peaceful living has been threatened at times since a few years.
 
Basti Vaman Shenoy, former president Konkani Sahitya Academy said that if the GSB community were the traders in the DK, Beary community was the provider of related services.  Both the community shared religious sense besides trading, he said.
 
M B Abdul Rehman, president of Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy delivered the welcome address.  Academy member Aziz Baikampady proposed the vote of thanks.  Radhakrishna Bhat and Academy member P Mohammed compered the programme.

    I was also there when Smt. Sara Abubakkar spoke. In the beginning, she regretted the absence of Beary women in the function. She also said that women are really willing to participate in such functions, but men have to cooperate.
