Postal ex-official, wife awarded jail terms, fine in corruption case


New Delhi, Nov 17 (IANS): A former Sub-Postmaster and his wife were awarded rigorous imprisonment along with fines totalling Rs 20 lakh by a special CBI court for accumulating illegal assets totalling Rs 1.29 crore.

The Special CBI Judge at Asansol in West Bengal sentenced Subir Mukherjee, who remained posted at Kharsauli Bazar Post Office in the state's Raniganaj area, to six years' rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10 lakh.

His wife Mala was handed out four years' rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 10 lakh.

The CBI had registered the case on November 7, 2016, saying that from January 1, 2000, to April 23, 2006, the accused had acquired in their names assets to the tune of Rs 1,29,36,202.

"The trial found the couple guilty of the charges and convicted them," the CBI said.
