Mangalore: Sarg Sonsar - Konkani Music Album Released at Valencia Fest

Mangalore, May 12: ‘Sarg Sonsar’, a Konkani music album with a blend of devotional and social theme was released at Valencia Parish on Wednesday May 12.

Vicar Var Fr Stany Goveas did the honours along with Fr Bonaventure Nazareth, the parish priest of Valencia Parish and Fr Maxim Rosario.

Fr Nazareth gave a brief introduction of the group ‘Dei Gratia’, comprising of youth mainly from Valencia Parish. “Mario and his group have tried to create Sarg (heaven) on this Sonsar (earth). The effort will certainly be an inspiration to all youth”, he said.
































Mario Monteiro, Jean Braggs, Alreen Lobo, Vinola Sequeira, Flavia Sequeira, Muriel Mascarenhas , Evangeline Lobo and Valen Sequeira were all invited on to the altar during the release.

Fr Stany Goveas lauded the efforts of the troupe. Mario Monteiro proposed the vote of thanks. He acknowledged everyone who in some way or the other helped in turning his dream into reality.

‘Sarg Sonsar’, a collection of both hymns and society-oriented songs, is the debut venture of ‘Dei Gratia’. The music has been provided by Mario Monteiro with the lyrics being drafted with a blend of youth and experience through Mario and Professor Lena Fernandes. 

The CD priced at Rs 100 is available at Jerosa Company, Gem & Co and Favourite Collections among other retail outlets.

    Like Max & Jessie Rasquinha, who wrote an emotional letter to this column from Houston, I too remember my good ole days in Valencia, where I was born and brought up. The celebration of festivals like X'Mas & Easter was very grand and quite fun. There were lots of games such as housy-housy, etc., from mid-night to dawn. In fact it was Valencia Parish which started this type of midnight-to-dawn celebration of these festivals, which was then followed by other parishes in Mangalore. People from other places used to flock to our Valencia to enjoy the festive night. When I visited the place nearly two years ago, I was just wondering if this was the place where I spent my childhood days. Lots of changes, new buildings in place of old and lots of new faces. Late Gregory Menezes' shop in front of the Church, which is a landmark of Valencia, was still there and I just met his son, Andrew and had a chat with him. I also came across the woman, whom I loved secretly but did not have the guts to tell her and I believe she is now happily married. After being away from home for many years, I felt I was a stranger in my native place.

    whenever I see such events, really I remember my childhood, wish I would have been there for such vodlem fest, how much we used to enjoy roaming around vendors 'SANTH', play, funny gambling, games,lucky dip draw,ice cream, thamde gulhe, religious articles, calenders, etc.. OLD IS GOLD, as I fully agree the true comments of Max & Jessie that 'those things money cannot buy today'. wish you all the best, may God bless all - long live such feasts.

    Firghoz "Fest" brings back so many great memories of the past. Life was simple but life was filled with so much of "jolly good" moods all around the house and also the neighbourhod. There were no radios, there were no cds and there were no dvds too. But there was so much of human talent and group singing . The stalls at the "Fest" had variety of sweets, juices and fruits. No one heard about any diabetic symptoms in those days hence everyone ate everysweet that was available. So many relatives and friends used to come from villages without being invited and without being notified, but "more the merrier" was the slogan of the household. In fact, if the house was full of guests it was the pride of the neighbourhood. There was no paper money in those days as gifts from parents or guests, but there were simple "anas" and then "naya paysas" that were gratefully accepted and wisely spent. Oh! what a great life of the past to recollect and rejoice that money cannot buy today. We still remember late Fr.Monthu Menezes as our Parish Priest, and Bishop Victor Fernandes as our Bishop. We had a country band owned by our beloved "Lorsham" and we also had a chubby friend called "Bhabiam" who used to slaughter our pigs for the feast. We also had a loyal friend called "Poothulham" who used to climb our coconut trees and pluck our coconuts. That's enough to recollect for the day as we are about to proceed on our pilgrimage to Fatima in Lisbon. Wish you all a "Vodlem Fest".
